Many had their doubts and wouldn't listen. "The Planet is on Fire!", they said. "We have twelve years to act!" others claimed. Perhaps the most popular was the "We Have To Do Something!", even if nobody could agree on what Something was.

Sure, they didn't get their predictions right the first time. Nor the second time. The third and fourth were a bit off too. The 76th was close, but no cigar. By the 156th, quite a few had lost all hope. But sure enough, the right one was just around the corner, as the 787th prediction hits the nail on the head after half a dozen boxes of nails wasted and countless trips to the nearby hospital.

Global Cooling/Global Warming/Climate Change/the Climate Apocalypse wipes out most of Earth's population as sea levels rose by a whooping 1cm over a period of 100 years and global temperatures change so much it got a little chillier in the Summer. In the midst of this disaster, the Global Village collectively puts its hopes of surviving the hellish combination of unbearable weather and obnoxious climate protesters on the unlikeliest place of the planet.

Antarctica.

The icy polar desert begun melting sometime around the first few decades of the millennium, but to the surprise of climate scientists and amateur climate enthusiasts, corrupt politicians and dishonest news channel talking heads alike, instead of witnessing the complete destruction of a whole continent, as the ice melted, it slowly begun revealing a never-before-seen layer of actual dirt that once lied beneath. A new, pristine Antarctica appears.

Global leaders took note and decided to switch their gears to the exploration of the now-potentially-inhabitable region. The Cold Rush, as the media dubbed it, sees the likes of Barron Trump's United States and Emperor Putin the III's Russia using their Antarctica bases to begin building mega-cities on its ground. The goal is simple: whoever gets to control Antarctica, controls the world; for all hope is lost for the old continents of the Earth.

The world of sports is one of many to play along.

Global Cooling/Global Warming/Climate Change/The Climate Apocalypse/The Extinction/arghh whatever I'm tired, The Climate...Thing - yes, The Climate Thing threatened the sustenance of the football world. Manchester United's Right-back Antoine Pogba was always one of the loudest protesters; once, the public was shocked to find out he stopped going to the barber every 12 hours to get a new hairdo and appeared with one that he sported for at least two full days. When confronted with it as he was exiting the training ground, he famously uttered: "why bother, if the rain always ruins the haircut?". He then yells "giddy-up!" and rides away on his horse-powered Jaguar carriage - yes, actual horses, since cars had been totally banned for a long while.

As you can see, this state of affairs was unbearable. Something had to be done, and this time everyone knew what Something was: fleeing the Old World to the New. The multiple global superpowers and South Africa, those that were in charge of Antarctica's new mega-cities, decide to found sports clubs all around the continent; and they want the best players of the world for their newly-created teams to form what everyone calls the "NBA of football" - a football league determined to become the undisputed leader of the sport.
Top-tier football superstars back in the Old World such as Pogba were acquired by these clubs for modest sums such as, in Pogba's case, 350 Billion dollars - I say modest because, at the time, the dollar had so little purchasing value that just five minutes after the news of Pogba's acquisition by Antarctica's McMurdo side got out, he was already worth 500 Billion. Imagine you're watching TV, then you go to the bathroom and get back and you're worth 150 Billions more. Did you just take a 150B piss? Yes, yes you did. So, you can see how happy Pogba must've been when he finally got to escape the dreadful stalking rain and find solace in Antarctica, where he could once again proudly display his barber's creativity with as much flamboyance as he did in the pre-Climate Thing days.

Eventually, all the once legendary football sides around the world sold all of their superstars to Antarctica, hoping to use the money to help surreptitiously fund more climate activists and TV channels, as well as the occasional solar panel and windmill. In Pogba's case, those 350 Billion were used to fix the lettering of the LD RAFFOR stadium sign, which elders still proudly claim it was called "Etihad Coca-Cola Subway Old Trafford" before the Great Chilly Days of 2037 - a potent year-long storm that completely tore autumn leaves out of trees and made your typical summer breeze feel like actual wind.

This was the beginning of the footballing domination of Antarctica. The NBA of football rises from the ashes of the Old World.

Antarctica is designed to be played as a Division 1 and a Division 2. The first 16 teams in the file are from the first division (and have slightly better players) the next sixteen are for the second division. The rest of the file will just be left as a default PES6 OF.

Division 1

Belgrano
San Martin
Mawson
Davis
Arturo
Dumont d'Urville
Neumayer
Maltri
Syowa
Novolazarevskaya
Mirny
Rothera
Vernadsky
McMurdo
Wasa
Arctowski

Division 2

Esperanza
Casey
Zhonshan
Concordia
Bahrati
Asuka
Scott Base
Progress
Vostok
Sanae IV
Halley
Palmer
Amundsen-Scott
Aboa
Troll
Marimba

Each team has been randomly assigned 4 strategies and also the A/B/C of offside/defensive line as well. Alongside this in a unique twist and to give even more of a nice variation in matches the 100 odd default PES6 formations were listed and the teams given a random number to match up to one of them. Resulting in all manner of formations throughout the league.

The season is usually preceded by a 32 team cup knockout played over 1 leg. The 16 Division 2 teams are given home advantage in the first round.

To build up to release of the file I'm going to play out a season as a Div 2 side picked at random and play each match starting with the cup. I will probably play as one midfielder through the season (or his replacement if he's not picked - AI auto picking with fatigue on).

I've now picked the side and it's going to be Aboa, a team representing Finland. Being their country's only representative we will hope the weight of that sits ok on my shoulders.

The cup draw has been made and our glorious Aboa boys will meet Davis (Australia) in the first round

@mattmid: Excited to see how all the different formations will impact the game. Whichever team gets the 5-4-1 formation with a C defensive line gets my unrelenting support!

Good luck with Aboa, Finland's new prime minister (see below) already told the press she expects no less than a title win.

(A-boa in portuguese means "the" (A) "good" (boa), but because of our language's gendered nouns, "boa" is the "female" word for "good". So "a boa" is often used (although in a class-less way) as a way to describe an attractive woman)

Good luck taking Aboa to the climax of international superiority!

The Season begins! Aboa meet Davis in the Antarctica Cup 1st Rnd. They will play at home as the Division 2 side and will hope to use home advantage against a strong Davis team.

(badges are just placeholders, @sniglet is in the process of making them)

We get our first look at the formations. Aboa will be playing with a 3-5-2 formation and yours truly will be taking the role of Valimaki in midfield (or whomever may replace him which is at the whim of the manager A. Ikkinen)

His stand out stats are his passing (80 long, 75 short) together with 75 Technique. Comfortable on either foot he will hope to get on the ball and get his team moving forward. Whether he'll have the time and room to do that we shall see. He is playing on the right hand side of the forward three in midfield.

Davis meanwhile come with an attacking 3-4-3 and have plenty of threats that Aboa will need to deal with.

form.JPG

Aboa made a bright start to the first half with Valimaki being pivotal in it. Receiving the ball near the edge of the box he quickly played it inside to Mensonen, who turned onto his left and struck a firm shot goalwards. Kenyon in the Davis goal was down quickly though to push it out. Aboa got to the rebound but could only shoot into the side netting from a tight angle.

This on the whole was the bright spot of the half for Aboa. On 11 minutes a corner came in from the left and it was Wells who rose highest to direct a header into the corner of the net and get his team ahead. Aboa will be disappointed to concede from a set-piece. Davis continued to cause problems throughout the half on a regular basis with Aboa struggling to really sustain any sort of attacking pressure.

Davis nearly doubled their lead midway through the half and really should have. Helenius in the Aboa goal made a good save low down but could only push it towards another striker. With Helenius struggling to get back he opted to put it down the middle when anywhere to the left would have been a sure goal. Helenius managed to scramble back and get to it before Kelmendi hacked clear as the ball fell loose.

Helenius produced another good save late on as Davis searched for a second goal that will surely put this tie to bed, should they find it. However for now it is just 0-1 at half time and Aboa will take heart from still being in this match.

Valimaki has had a quiet half for the most part after his early contribution. A couple of wayward passes and failing to track his man, which lead to a shot on goal will not have gone down well with his manager.

ab3.JPG

Seemingly suffering no ill effects from the hairdryer treatment at half time Valimaki again started the half brightly. Surging forward only to be fouled, or so he thought, as he tried to play in Mensonen. The ref was having none of it and despite Valimaki sitting on the floor waving his arms at him, he wasn't changing his decision. Having finally got up, the ball then broke to him 30 yards out, he got it under control and sent in a shot that drifted wide after initially looking threatening.

Much like the first half though, after the bright start Davis began to assert control. With the packed midfield they gave Aboa no room to put passes together with their quick interceptions, swiftly turning over possession time and time again.

On 70 minutes the inevitable second goal came along as RWB Taylor found himself on the six yard line with the goal at his mercy after following up a shot that the keeper could only parry. He dispatched the ball and with that there was no way back for the outclassed Aboa team. Had the very early shot gone in perhaps they could have held out for penalties, but in all truth that would have been unlikely.

ABOA4.JPG

aboa5.JPG

Valimaki showed glimpses of promise but had very little of the ball and very rarely in space. He lasted 71 minutes before being replaced by Koponen. Koponen had a little bit of liveliness and agility about him and twice got in decent crosses late on but whilst one was met by an Aboa player it was directed well wide.

So, Davis are through to the second round and on this showing look a strong outfit.

Here's how the rest of the 1st Round played out...

A strong showing from the Division 1 sides, particularly Maltri and Belgrano, 4-0 and 4-1 winners respectively. However, Division 1 didn't have it all it's own way, with Scott Base only going down in extra time, whilst Marambia (2-1), Asuka (1-0) and Bahrati (1-0) made it through to the last 16. Will they be the teams pushing for promotion from Division 2?

Rest of the Cup tournament to follow in the message below.

Second Round

An absolute goal bonanza!

The 2nd Division teams all fell by the wayside. Marambia going down 1-0 and Bahrati 2-0, but spare a thought for poor Asuka. A valiant 2-2 at full time, a 3-3 after extra time and then beaten by no less than 9-8(!) on penalties byMaltri, the team who strolled through with a 4-0 win over Vostok in the 1st Round. Asuka surely to be one of the front runners in Division 2 this season?

Elsewhere and incredible extra time at Novolazarevskaya where a 1-1 FT ended 3-5 AET!! Continuing the goal blitz were Mawson who won 4-3 AET against Aboa's slayers Davis, in an all Australian affair.

Quarter Finals

There was no letting up of the goals in the Quarter Finals either. Dumontt D'Urville and McMurdo shared 6 before the French side won on penalties. Elswhere Neumayer (2-1), Arturo (3-2) and Syowa (3-2) took the spoils and make the Semi Finals.

Who do we make the favourites at this stage? Dumontt have won 2-1 against a Div 2 side and gone to penalties. Neumayer have won 3-0 v Div 2, 3-1 and 2-1against Mawson who beat Davis last round. Arturo only just edged out Maltri who were taken all the way by a 2nd Division side whilst Syowa have scored 3 every round but were taken to extra time by Scott-Base of the 2nd Division. So make of that what you will. At this stage I think Neumayer might just have the edge but perhaps Asuka are going to prove to be a really strong team in Divison 2 in which case Arturo beating their conqueror's Maltri might also prove a good result. So I'm hedging my bets on a Neumayer v Arturo final.

qf.JPG

The Semi Finals

Well that's my prediction down the drain as Dumontt run out 3-1 winners against Neumayer. Arturo though do make the final, winning 2-1 against Syowa. So it's France v Chile batting for the honour of being the nation behind the first Antarctica Cup Winners. There has been no word from Finland's Prime Minister but it is believed she doesn't look quite so nice when she's angry.

The Final

A Thriller in the Chiller? Ok, ok, but you rhyme something with Antarctica then.

Arturo win the first Antarctica Cup 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 AET scoreline.

And, well... Looking at that photo I wouldn't really want to be in Aboa's manager should they nt win the title.
I mean, she looks angry already and the season hasn't started yet.

The season is underway.

First match was away to Sanae IV, a South African outfit. With them playing 4-5-1 and Aboa 3-5-2 this was the resulting midfield:

With space at a premium as well as chances Aboa were content to come away with a 0-0 draw to start the season off.

Week 1 Results

m1.JPG

Week 2 and it was time for the first home game of the season. Progress were the visitors along with the Prime Minister. Despite the pressure in the stands Aboa played well and although it was 0-0 at half time they were the better team during the first half. On 57 minutes a clumsy challenge in the box saw Aboa get a penalty. Mensonen stepped up to tuck it away nicely into the left hand corner. Buoyed by this Aboa pushed on and it was Taskinen who headed in a cross for the second goal on 77 minutes to put them firmly in control. They saw it out and took their first victory of the season.

m2.JPG

With no side managing to win their first two games, Aboa sit 2nd on 4 points, alongside Scott Base and Bahrati. Halley prop up the table as the only team without a point so far.

With the PM on the stands it's easier to win. If Aboa keeps on going on the right track, she'll bring some friends to the next matches.
