Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

The article mentions that only two titles were released in January - both being on Blu-Ray. Additionally, it wasn't a great month for total BD/HD-DVD sales - so the difference (in number) is prob ain't that much between the 1:2 ratio.

Regardless, I'm sure there are many who'll say that the "war" is irrelevant...it's particularly annoying that there are exclusives either side - so most'll prob invest in a Dual player (HD-DVD + BD).

With price per GB/TB dropping everyday with HDDs, there are many who'll be happy to move onto digital storage. Gone are the days where you have to get up and plug in a disc...we are the 21st century you know! ;)

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

Nah they are probably fabricated facts and figures in all honesty, from what I heard HD/DVD is out gunning Blu Ray at the moment.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

Early days still. I still don't see people downloading films to store on HDDs. I and many others love would prefer to have like a HARD copy of the film.

Re: The TV Thread

Yea..I used to feel the same but after plenty of scratched DVDs (usually by pesky kids playing with em and friends borrowings), I'll love to move onto a fixed storage. And lazy as it sounds, sometimes I can't be bothered to go upstairs to get a DVD out

Sony chops prices on Blu-Ray player

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070226-8925.html

Sony drop the price from $1000 down to $599. Still does not beat the PS3 which can be gotten for $499, but there is a huge market for those just wanting a dedicated player which doesn't heat up as much as game consoles.

The prob with Blu-Ray players have been the price. This step taken by Sony is likely to have a significant effect on the outcome of this format war. With exclusives like 24 and the Spider-man movies, I'll prob say that HD-DVD's fight could soon be over (glad I didn't invest in the 360 HD-DVD addon!)

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

I think the future should be just buying the discs and having a player let you copy them to a massive (1TB) hard drive.

Basically something like XBMC. They would have to get better DRM if they were to do this though, to stop people just copying the film and then selling it on.

Good news and bad for Sony. They will be taking losses I think if they drop prices like that I think.

And as for digtal storage, I'm not a fan especially with reliability and ease of use, there are a lot of average Joe's who wouldn't understand how to do all this. Easier just to play via disc and I prefer it, so you can show off your collection... aminly of TV boxsets

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

They'll ALWAYS lose money in the beginning. That's a given. The trick is to have people buy the hell out of their console/players for many years to come.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

I still think consoles won't be the lynch-pin in deciding the outcome, more about the players and content.

yep truesay...some analysts are even saying that the ongoing ramblings of the PS3 isn't exactly helping Bluray.

Whether it be HD-DVD or Bluray, I hope that there is one winner from all this. I don't want to think about having to wait another 3 months for a film already out on HD-DVD to come out on Bluray and vice versa.

LOL! I think the war will be over in 2 years minimum. And if not, then multi players here we come....

HD-DVD Winning the European Race
Despite stong sales of Blu-ray in North America, a Financial Times report is claiming that HD-DVD appears to be winning the next generation format war in Europe. The news comes due to a large number of independent studios such as Filmax opting to exclusively release titles on HD-DVD.
Next-Gen.biz said:
While admitting that there is a long way to go before a clear victor emerges, Rodolphe Buet, Studio Canal's chief marketing officer, states that the marketing strategies employed by HD-DVD backers were far superior to those of Blu-ray manufacturers.

"I have met much more commitment from partners involved with HD-DVD than Blu-Ray. I met Sony in mid-2006 but the support was far below what was offered by the HD-DVD partners.”

However, “I am totally agnostic," he continues. "All the work we are doing on High Definition will be useful for making Blu-Ray discs if the Blu-Ray standard wins. It will be easy to change position."

Thats also due to the por Blu-Ray releases in Europe. This will soon change. I still think MS should of put the hd-dvd in the Elite 360.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

Worrying for those who bought standalone BD playes, because they are releasing the new BD-J players soon, and this will mean features on new discs won't work on first gen players.

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6427147.html?nid=2705
Then October 2007 should have been the right time for them to launch blu ray. Even for their summer release not to have it is really a disservice to their customers. IOW, people who have been buying BD since it launched has been shortchanged eversince. Seems to me that the full capability of HD DVD has been there since day one. It will only be in October, almost a year after it launched, when the full capability of BD will be available. Now the BD market have no choice but to upgrade one year after if they want those features. And BD will soon be releasing new title versions with the BD-J feature for them to double dip. Nice strategy.

And those who have Blu-Ray, buy The Prestige! Great film!

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

ANd those who have HD-DVD and want The Prestige, just wait a hile for the European release!

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

I dont think any HDDVDs are region locked though.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war

....prob because only Universal, Warner Bros and a few random arthouse production companies are supporting HD-DVD. Maybe someone can confirm this, but if the same companies supporting Blu-Ray were to support HD-DVD, it's likely that we'll see region locking in HD-DVD too?

(or maybe, the other companies didn't go with HD-DVD as it didn't allow region coding? those greedy buggers!)
