Referee Edilson Pereira de Carvalho was arrested last night due to alleged received bribes he took, in order to influence the results of games.
He refereed 11 matches during the current Campeonato Brasileiro, which may now have to be replayed, throwing the whole season into doubt.
The CBF has asked FIFA to immediately suspend Mr Carvalho as an approved international referee.
The referee's actions were discovered when Brazilian police secretly recorded the phone conversations of Mr Carvalho, 43.
It is alleged that he received instructions on matches from participants in an internet betting ring.
Mr Carvalho would then favour one team or the other, allegedly for a fee of between $4,000 and $6,000 per game.
The 11 games refereed by Mr Carvalho will almost certainly have to be replayed and, amid claims of more widespread match-fixing, the Brazilian Football Confederation has promised an independent inquiry.
"As we're talking about Brazil, this doesn't surprise me," said Fluminense coach Abel Braga, whose team lost 2-0 to Juventude in a match refereed by Carvalho on August 14.
"It's a reflection of the country. Now this has come to light, we can understand how some results happened. Against Juventude, he awarded them a non-existent penalty and gave two absurd offsides.
