Hello,

Thought I'd try this out. I'm sure a few of you have got dvd's was wondering if anyone would like to exchange recommendations of films and what every collection should have.

Have got a few and my tastes are eclectic* to say da least. Feel free to rate.

http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=spikester

Realise there's obvious stuff missing, like the Godfathers and Shinning, such like. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas for the less popular titles?

* = I loved Old Boy, but can't stand musicals (never seen the Sound of Music), also I think Death Race 2000 is an ace film, cos it's that bad.

 You mean, you haven't got Dumb and Dumber???

No, nor Dude Where's Me Motor? Never seen Dumb and Dumber, is it the sort of film you'd watch more than twice? Which qualifies a film worthy of a collection.

Is Dumb and Dumber better than Cool Runnings? ;)

Though the catalogue system I used doesn't include the Island (Michael Caine film early 80's), which is one of the best films ever - so bad it's superb!

Note - I have the early 80's version of the Firm - with da Snowman and everything.

best western - young guns
best war film - platoon
best comedy - planes, trains and automobiles
best coming of age - stand by me
best horror - pet cemetery/the evil dead ( scary as hell when you're about 14! )
best drama - sleepers/murder in the first
best family - back to the future
best suspense - misery

Very nice collection I have to say! But I do can think of some titles which you dont have and which are great movies:

-Amores Perros
-American Beauty
-Taxi Driver
-Festen (The Cekebration) <--absolutly great
-Raging Bull
-Lock Stock & Two smoking barrels
-True Romance
-Casino
-Around the Bend
-King of New York

Hope it helps you and my apologies if some are already in your list!

I mainly just have TV boxsets on DVD, and some comedy movies, don't think I actually own any drama/sci-fi etc.

Your collections looks really good, can't see my 3 favourite films though, Leon, True Romance and Forrest Gump.

I have watched it about 10 times !!

It is the funniest film I have ever seen, a classic.

Oops, my list isn't that complete:

American Beauty & Taxi Driver I have, although I think Taxi Driver only a so-so film.

Lock Stock & True Romance are a definate must buy, always found Raging Bull really slow film, maybe I should give it a chance.

As for the best films, here's my take on things (not in my collection!):

best western - Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
best war film - The Ascent
best comedy - Rosencrantz and Guildenstein Must Die
best horror - Dog Soldiers (pure cheese factor)
best drama - Young Teens 14*
Best TV series: Battle of the Planets
Best Sports film: Escape to Victory (pele & caine in the same film!)
best family - Bugsy Malone

I don't do coming of age as a rule!

* = might not be true :)

Hutch, some nice TV collections there, most impressed, also haveing a list helps with on-line shopping. Good to see Bladder there. I should put some of mine up, I got disheartened trying to put Brass Eye on, any ways this is the TV stuff:

Brass Eye
Complete Comic Strip Collection (Mr Jolly Lives Next Door is superb)
Pheonix Nights (Series 1)
Ricky Jervais Animals
Trigger Happy TV (Best of)
And something else I can't remember....

Get some Kurosawa......Seven Samurai is legendary :)

btw, Funniest film imo = Coming to America (Eddie Murphy in top form here)

Hidden Fortress is quality too, amazing how rip off Hollywood is.

Trading Places is top too.

DVD release of 'Shinobi' soon. Imagine a Japanese X-Men crossed with a samurai film. Great action. Saw it at the cinema here. DVD will have English subs too.

Hey Spikey if your into your DVD stuff you should buy Royal Rumble 2000 (if you like wrestling that is), it's a great DVD full of unseen footage and bonus. It was my first DVD i ever bought...I remember they showed Royal Rumble 2000 on C4 and they had flipping adverts and cutting of footages...it wasn't even LIVE for fuck sake LOL. So i had to get the DVD and it's brilliant. Got it for £20 (from HMV) back in July 2000, probably might be a bit cheaper now. So you should check it out.

Thanks Stringer, but if I had to choose a form of wrestling in a 'pain of death' situation, I'd have to go for the old school UK early 80's version, which I think there's a DVD out for. Kendo Nakasaki was the don.

As for the Jap version of X-men, now that sounds good, on the proviso there's some sorta young lady school uniform stylie going on, which reminds me I got round to buying Battle Royale 1 & 2 the other day.

Thank god for that listing, am in danger every now and then of doing the odd double purchase.

Watched some Brass Eye the other night, classic :)

Have you got any Jessop Jessop Jessop by any chance? I don't want to be a piano dentist or my arms feel like a couple of fortnights in a bad balloon.

Brass Eye is the best:D

On DVD at the mo its all about Curb Your Enthusiasm, possibly the funniest TV programme ever made, its written by the dude who is responsible for Seinfield, ive developed a six pack laughing at this!!

Watched season 2 of Arrested Devlopment over the last few days couldn't stop laughing and I'll get season 3 as soon as it's out (if it's not already?).

Is that the one with the obituary gag?

Spikey mate, you need these comedies:

Anchorman
Dumb and Dumber
Fletch (probably a box set of them)
Hear No Evil See No Evil
Stir Crazy

;)

Then for some TV:

Seinfeld (multiple series available)
Arrested Development (Series 1 & 2)

Hello, been away for a bit, had a case of Czech Neck. Most disturbing. \\:o/

Still getting grief from the Mrs about my lack of comedy. Watched a mates copy of Anchor Man the other night - quality film, I'll pick it up on the cheap.

You've mentioned some classics there, am lacking some Wilde.

Oh what to buy....

Have any of you lot seen the original Bedazzled?

Saw Sympathy for Lady Vengence too, nice film

original bedazzled was great. why do they always ruin my favourite films with shitty meaningless remakes.
They're doing Warriors apparently. bastards
Anyone know a remake that was actually better than the original?

I thought the new Dawn of the Dead was better than the original personally. You're right though, on the most part they just fuck them up. I'm not a fan of the old Pink Panther but the new re-make looks pretty horrendous. Beyonce's in it for god's sake, it's just all about money money money.
