Revised FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking

In Berlin today (6 July 2006), three days before the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, FIFA presented the revised FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. The new method will be applied immediately after this year's FIFA World Cup™, with the first new FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking to be published on 12 July. "We have acknowledged the need for a substantial revision. I am convinced that our experts have come up with a satisfactory solution for a new way of calculating the ranking. We are aware that it is difficult to meet everybody's expectations, but are confident that the new system will provide an accurate measure of the strength of each of our member associations," said Blatter.

Since its introduction in August 1993, the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking has become a regular part of international sports reports and an important indicator for FIFA's 207 member associations to find out where their respective teams stand in world football and how they are progressing.

Nevertheless, the increasingly high profile of the world ranking also attracted some criticism indicating that its calculation formula was too complicated. Therefore, in 2005, under the chairmanship of Michel Platini (France) and Ángel María Villar Llona (Spain), the FIFA Technical and Development Committee and the FIFA Football Committee decided to revise the ranking in order to simplify the way in which it is calculated.

A multinational group comprising FIFA staff and external experts was subsequently formed to find a new procedure for drawing up the world ranking. Extensive tests and assessments were then carried out, which - following a number of presentations - reached their conclusion at the end of 2005.
Transparency and simplicity - the key principles guiding the revision - have been combined with sporting criteria and statistical requirements to establish the new and simplified method of calculation that the FIFA Executive Committee ratified at its meeting in Leipzig, Germany, on 7 December 2005.

The most important change to the calculation of the ranking is that it will no longer take into account the last eight years of results but only the last four. At the same time, all of the other factors previously taken into account (result, importance of match, strength of opponents, regional strength, number of matches considered) were tested, analysed and, in some cases, totally revised. In fact, two of the factors that were previously used (goals scored and home advantage) will no longer have any impact on the ranking.

Next year, the official website of the football's world governing body, FIFA.com, will also offer an online tool that will make it possible to carry out hypothetical calculations for all teams based on the consolidated database of FIFA's Information Services Department.

at last a proper world ranking! Supirsed that Nigeria and Cameroon are so high though.

England, after their woeful fumbling through the group stage and clueless elimination against a poor Portugal side, have been promoted to 5th!! :lmao:

Who's more clueless, the FA or FIFA? It's a tough one...

it also doesn't say its based on performances and 'entertaining' football:lol:

In the last 4 years.

Brazil won the world cup (2002)
Brazil won the copa america (2004)
Brazil finished first of conmebol eliminatories (2003-2005)
Brazil won confederations cup (2005)
Brazil finished 5th of 2006 world cup (2006)

So well, why should we be lower than France or others? No reason.

But, next year, it'll count 2003-2007, so i am pretty sure that Italy will pass ahead of us.

The mere fact that England is ahead of Portugal is enough to take away all the credibility this could ever have.

:lmao: I think on that basis it has more credibility. ;) You havent beat us in the last two championships, it was a draw thats how the results are marked down. You also never played any qualifiers for the Euros two years ago so no points for that stage.

France win Confed Cup 2003 and second in WC 2006 and we beat Brazil

WTF ??? Brazil finish 5th ????

thats purely points gained SINCE May O6, when the last rankings were released. The TOTAL is still based on a longer period of time.

Remember Brazil won all of their group games.

Come the next ranking date, Brazil will probably drop 1 or 2 places.

Not right air.
The fact is that this ranking accounts to things usually invisible.
First of all it accounts to the quality of the oposition each one faced. Now even forgetting the previous 4 years it's obvious that the oposition that England met in group stage in WC was a bit harder than ours and that shows in their ranking.

On the other hand England played qualifiers for Euro 2004, we didnt.

In the end there is probably the argument of "but we had english arse for desert twice". Yep but always in penalties, and if I'm not mistaken those games count as ties for both teams, in this ranking.

Conclusion: seems unfair but it aint. In the end you should apply the same rational susan sarandon once applied in a movie I saw. She was having sex with a guy thinking of another, and screaming that other's name. At a certain moment the guy having sex with her says "hey, you're with me and screaming his name?!". And she asked: "why? do you rather see me having sex with him and saying your name?".

So... in this case let them have the better ranking :). Would you trade that for the feeling we had in both tames in 2004 and 2006? I don't believe you would, I wouldn't ;)

England are far better than Portugal. Everyone knows this. Just like Italy are better than us (France).

It's just laughable seeing Germany after Portugal and England, Holland and Spain before Portugal, what a shame this FIFA!

Portugal and Germany didn't have qualifiers, each team for one of the two tournaments that are considered in this ranking. That makes 10 up to 12 matches missing, most of them (most likely to be) wins or at least draws since those two teams, the Germans especially always make it to the respective cup. That explains there rather low place, though I can't complain, really.

Brazil, Italy and Argentina are up there with every right in the world. First two mentioned teams are the last World Cup winners, third one at least made it to the last quarters and always batters it's opponents in the qualifiers.
Someone already posted the latest sucess of the French team, which prove their rank right, too. (Top o' that they eliminated Brazil, which probably got them a OMFGROFL!!!!111-bonus or sumthn...;))
England deserves its spot as well. Quarters aren't exactly what the English folks expect from their squad, by no means, but that doesn't make it a lesser achievement at all. (And we speak of three consecutives here.) And they're not on pole position, so why all the whining?
I'm a wee bit surprised how Holland got the spot behind em, though. Did not participate 2002, played well 2004, went home early 2006, and that's a sixth place? Hmm, whatever.
