Glitchy play / slowdown

Hi

I am getting visual glitches and slowdown during games and can't work out what the problem is. At first I thought it was the dvd bug, but now I use a nocd image. Then I thought it was lag - but alas it occurs even when I'm not online. It's true that it seems to be more prevalent during the 1st match of a session. However, it often crops up at random moments even after I've played quite a few games.

Specs below:
Refresh rate 60 hertz
XP serv pack 2
Pentium 4 3.2ghz
1.25 gb ram
Radeon 9800xt (omega 6.08 driver)
Hyundai imagequest L90D+
 
Try:

*Lowering your graphics quality and resolution in the options.
*Getting latest drivers for your video card (and everything else in fact)
*Shutting down all background processes, especially virus scanners.
*Defragging your harddrive.
