Hey guys, Just wanted to know if any of you own or have seen a hdtv?

Just that the next gen console are chatting loads about them, whats the deal? All I know is that they are high definition tv's that allow you to play your xbox 360/ps3 with an amazing picture.

I havnt been able to find any in the uk, except on ebay where the widescreen ones are well over £1000!

you need a dvi inout for the hish defintion stuff that sky will be bringing in this year alot of tvs have that already, look for DVI input!
 
I've seen a HDTV in Makro, its looks very nice, it was aorund 40" plus, didnt cost much as well.
 
Could someone explain to me what a High Definition TV actually is?
Whats the technical difference?
 
its basically down to the amount of lines if resolutuion and the way it then scans your picture plus dolby surround sound on normal tv, its basiaclly twice the quality of a nstc signal!
 
NTSC usually uses 648 x 486 resolution, whereas HD can be several different kinds. 480p, 720p and 1080i are the usual resolutions used and describe the type of picture.

The number gives you the number of horizontal lines (the more the better) and the i/p refers to the type of picture. i is interlaced, and is the way normal TVs work, where it only draws half the picture on each pass, say doing odd lines one refresh, even ones on the next. p is progressive scan where it draws the whole frame on each refresh, and effectively looks better.

There's not much to pick between 720p and 1080i as the resolutions and refresh types play off against each other. If you want a TV for the future, look for those types, as it's those that HDTV will use and the new consoles too.
 
Pretty sure the latest telly the old man bought has HD, any current gen games/systems I can try it out on to see?
 
Yeah, Xbox, PS2 and gamecube. In some instances these have to be the import version, in some chipped. A modded xbox has the option and you may have to have the imported verion of the software. I believe Triangle and X held on boot enable PS2 HD, but again it's got to be a console and game that support it.
 
I read an article saying hdtv's arent actually 'officailly' scheduled to be released in europe until 2007!

As for seeing it in makro, dont you have to have some sort of membership card to get in?
 
They are certainly out, I checked up on mine and turns out it is HDMI-compatible, 1080i/p, DVI, etc, so basically I have a HDTV.

Only thing is on my Xbox settings screen the only 2 options under video are widescreen and pal 60 on/off, nothing about progressive scan or HD. This is when it's plugged into the regular TV, not the HD one, but I don't imagine it would change even then.

Can you get HD gaming with a PAL Xbox?
 
Heard it's this year sometime, also heard NTL are gonna take it up too but I'll believe that when I see it (feckers).

It's all well and good having a HDTV but I ain't got anything to play on it! I tried WE8LE on it and maybe it was just my mind playing tricks on me but it looked worse than on my own TV. That might be because the bigger the TV, the more stretched and pixellated it looks, a bit like when you stretch the window size while viewing porno clips and get a muff full of squares. :mrgreen:
 
Yup, that's why. A PAL xbox can only do prog scan if it's been chipped/modded, I believe it can then be enabled in options. You may need a different lead too, if you check american sites they sell hi-def kits.

you need a component cable to get progressive scan on the xbox.


i used this cheat to enable my pal xbox to play progressve scan on my hi def lcd.

most xbox games only output 480p which isn't really true hi def picture. i tried the matrix game which is 1080i which looks stunning, also soul calibur II is 720p but in a 4:3 format which also looks amazing.

i can't wait for the hi def games on 360 and ps3.

classic, you already have one? did you buy it from a normal store?

Lucky just read you messege coz had given up and was gona buy a flat screen!

The thing is Im really having problems finding one because they're not described as hdtv's. Im just looking for numbers like 720p and 1080i? all the info i tend to get is stuff like 100hz etc.

Any places anyone can recommend?

Cheers Kenny, unfortunately I don't have any of that stuff and seeing as not many game support it, plus the fact 360 is only about 6 months or so away I don't think I'll bother my arse.

Adonis, yep I already have that TV, it's a SAMSUNG LW32A33WX. Think it was on a special offer, the folks paid under a grand for it anyway, and wherever they got it from threw in a nice portable DVD player-thingy.

Anyway, try looking for 'HDMI' in feature lists too, it means 'High Definition Multimedia Interface' or something, the 720p and 1080i thingies are good to look for as well :).
 
yes, sky will be broadcasting in hi def next year and your tv will need hdmi input to accept the signal.

my lcd does not have hdmi as i will not be using skys new service, but it accepts 480p,720p,1080i and 1080p progreesive scan.

tv's without hdmi are not classed as hi def tv's, but they may be able to accept a hi def input.
 
thanx for your help guys. gonna try and find me a hi def tv today!

but seeing as many hd services dont start until next year im not sure whether to, or just wait for a tv that supports 1080p aswell as 1080i.

An idea for you Mate, if you can be arsed with the Setting up involved ....

Basically you can really impress yourself and your Family by hooking up your PC to the TV with DVI/TV Out and then getting HD WMV Clips from ...

Then basically just run it and be pleasantly impressed ... Hopefully.


I can vouch for the "Robotica" clip, looks cool and is only a Small-ish D/L'd.

i have had a HD tv for about 4 years, watching 24 on HD is def a plus, not to mention, NFL football, golf, and the best sport is tennis, I was able to catch one soccer/footie on tv and its very impressive, however its just not worth it to buy now, wait for the signals to be broadcast over there before I would buy...
 
I am looking to buy a new TV, looking through catalogues. There are TV's which are called IDTV's. It says the IDTV's will accept the new digital signals coming to UK in 2007.

I see that IDTV means a tv which can handle digital signals without a freeview box.

Need help.

Say I buy a TV with DVI, will I be able to recieve HDTV? Yes. But what is the disadvantage of DVI compared to buying a TV with HDMI.
Also does DVI, support PC input?
 
Not sure mate but I would have thought any TV with HDMI would actually require a DVI-in socket in the first place, so if it's got HDMI it should have DVI?

Yep DVI means you can stick your PC on the telly too.
