Finally a new stadium for Lille! Looks great. The Arena Filip Vtori in Skopje is almost finished, just the turf, athletic track and the outside facade need to be completed. It's on the same place as the old Gradski stadium, only the northern stand was kept and renovated. Here are some pictures.

Quote: 'Phillip II Arena, best in Balkans
Saturday, 11 February 2012

Italian sports' magazine Guerin Sportivo ranked Skopje's Phillip II Arena as the best Stadium in the Balkans.
Wembley, perhaps expected was the #1 stadium in the world.
Although Phillip II isn't as known as other major stadiums since it was completed just last year, it still ranked higher than famous stadiums of Olympic Marseille, Benfica, Red Star (Marakana), Monte Carlo... Interestingly enough, Hajduk's stadium 'Poljud' which in the past was considered the best stadium in Yugoslavia, did not even make the ranking.

In its description for Phillip II Arena, Guerin Sportivo says "Who says you cannot get luxury in small countries. The new stadium is not even similar to the original version. During the night, when the lights at Phillip II are turned on, it is the most fantastic sculpture in Skopje.." says Guerin Sportivo.
Next year, Phillip II may climb the rankings further as the stadium is in the process of completely revamping the pitch surface, creating a special drainage system that will prevent any water/rain from accumulating on the pitch. The athletic lanes are also reconstructed.'

How do these 3rd world countries finance their stadiums? Seeing the likes of Turkey building is impressive. They look like my country in Dom. Rep. ( which they manage to build a under ground NY City tube system on a freaking island  )

A. Owner built
B. Government issued
C. Corporate share owners
D. Old fashion via Bank

@t: Nice to see such a beauty for Lille, I am just not sure if they really need a 5*-stadium in this city.

You are calling Turkey a 3rd world country? A member of G20?

The Velodrome canopy will be one of the modern marvels of engineering IMHO. Can't say it's particularly attractive (though I will withhold my final judgement til its complete) but it's an amazing project nonetheless. It already was a pretty unique stadium..after the renovation/expansion it will truly be among THE most unique.

OL stadium is going to be awesome. I remember seeing the plans in a 3D representation where you could navigate every part of the stadium. I liked it a lot.

Okay, the edges of their roofs will be hammered down by a demolition ball so the arena looks unique.

Haha.

The area around the stadium looks really cool though, the restaurants etc. underneath those little perks of grass, looks nice.

Rubin's new stadium looks very nice, though I must say I am slowly getting a bit tired of the Emirates and Allianz "copies". However, I do understand the reasons for building a proven design.

This is not a copy, but it is really a bit like the Emirates. Most likely this is because the stadium was being developed by "Populous", which also designed of London's stadium. ;)

Ah that makes sense then, cool beans. Interesting placement of the tunnels btw.
