PES 2011 Demo impressions

According to some sources the touchline bug is off the final version...even Jon Murphy at his twitter says something about it. Even at WEblog they are already talking about it.

I think it's going to be a year of PES back again...I GUESS.

JUST for INFO:
Eurogamer that has already reviewed FIFA 11 is mentioning the oddness of this year FIFA.
On the reverse IGN Uk gave FIFA 11 9.5/10!!!! I think it's a little bit overrated, but like I said i've just played the demos...LOL. If you check in the side the user score is in 7.4...LOL again.
http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/112/1123409p2.html

I was just hesitant about purchasing the PC or PS3 version of PES 2011...but right now I just don't know again.
Its great to hear the jog bug has been fixed.

As far as the reviews go, I already made up my mind that I won't pay attention to them and just go with what I saw from teh demo, which was a very good Pes game. Its funny indeed that IGN rated the game 9.5 while the users rating is 7.4 someone is out of touch with reality.

Can anyone explain to me why they took the L1 feature out - when you're in possession of the ball, you tap L1 (I think) and your team mate ahead of you makes a run so you can time a well-placed through ball!!

No, i think it's still there. You have to press L1 and pass. This will pass to your chosen player and the passer will then continue forward. You can then choose to pass, lob or through ball, to him.

Played the demo for the first time last night and i like it. Much better than last year's demo. A little floaty here and there and i'll have to get used to the left stick for directional movement and placement of passes, but over time i think i can get used to it.
The only problem will be trying to get an OF onto my Xbox without hassle.

FIFA is a huge marketing power...it's normal that it has higher standards in visual technique. Look at the FIFA World Cup game presentation...it's a massive game only by looking at it. EA is perfect in recreating the mood that breeds in a football match but...PES is better (I hope by the DEMO...it seems to be) in recreating what it is playing the game, it's better in recreating the difference between a Lampard and a Deco, between a Miccoli and a Luca Toni...it's like Konami gives us the engine for the players to be the stars and not the presentation by itself.

wow!! well put.. couldn't have stated it better myself.

Thanks.

Here in Portugal there's a huge fanbase of PES. I've only put aside last year's title because in my opinion FIFA was better. But this year PES is back to that old feeling. It seems odd that not everyone feels the same thing for a franchise that deserves credit.

And sometimes we still see someone say that FIFA is the real football simulator, FIFA is enjoyment, PES is glory, but a hard one to apreciate and especially to master.

Ok so we have Assisted, Semi-Assisted or Manual.

Is there a mode that is Manual but you take control of the player once you get the ball?

So with Manual as is right now, if I pass to someone on my team, I also have to manually take control of the pass receipiant... which kinda pisses me off.

I'm 99.99% sure that at some point in the PES history there was a manual mode where control did shift automatically to the guy receiving the pass, am I remembering that wrong?

Thanks.

I have to admit it was somewhat of a fluke that got me back to PES this year. I was a big fan of ISS back when it was released in 97, and followed it until the move to PS3/Xbox360, but was really disappointed by PES 2008. Really thought FIFA had won it for good, but decided to check out the demo this year just for the heck of it, and damn am I glad I did, feels so much better than FIFA, but I have said that too many times now.

I think too many people converted to FIFA just wont give PES a fair chance this year because of the last couple of years.

No you're right. That was the only way I played PES and that was perfect. Switching was great as well and couldn't play it any other way. I have the slightest idea why they changed that and and it the way it is. It's too much work.

It is ridiculous, I just can't imagine anyone saying, hey! lets get rid of that.. but.. it happened and I don't know, sometimes these decisions are mind boggling :(

Yeah that way does work, but in past versions you could just press L1 whilst you have the ball, then the next closest team mate ahead of you will make a run without having to make a pass first. It was brilliant! No reason why they should have taken that out of the game... Hopefully they'll put it back in!

I didn't know they had that. I thought only FIFA had the L1 trigger run command. Did the older PES really have it?

Not that I have ever known. R2 after the pass is the only way to manually set him on a run, with the obvious exception of the one-two.

So i decided to get the WE 2011 demo as well, cuz i read it differs from the PES 2011 demo.

And it does differ, it seems it's more fluid and just feels better overall.
Shooting feels different too (somewhat heavier compared to PES 2011) and player switching now seems to make way more sense.
Also the AI defending/attacking is also more varied/agressive..
I think the sideline (near box) bug is still in it, but to a way lesser extent because the AI defending is just better overall. Imo it doesn't seem (as) broken as was stated with the PES 2011 demo.
Barely seen the advantage rule get applied.. not that there were so many instances where the CPU or myself got a clear advantage after a foul tho..
Oh and I read on here that in PES 2011 demo (some?) off-the-ball tackles were going unpunished.. well that clearly isn't the case in the WE 2011 demo, tho i can't confirm this for PES 2011 cuz i didn't really do off-the-ball tackles.

I just played a few games, but boy this feels better than the PES 2011 demo.
Tho i really enjoyed the PES 2011 demo, it felt somewhat static compared to the WE 2011 demo. It just feels (and even looks?) more polished, fluid, responsive and more dynamic/intuitive.

I'm anxiously looking more & more forward to the actual full game!
Jon Murphy or what's his name, saying that the PES 2011 demo is based on the full game is a load of crap that's for sure.. Maybe the WE 2011 demo, but no way the PES 2011 version.

Other people on here tried the WE 2011 demo?
What are your thoughts?...

I'm confused as to what R2 does differently than L1?

L1 and X intiates a one-two from the get-go.

X or Circle, or Through-ball then R2 gives you the option to make the player run, 'after' the ball has left your foot. For instance, if you ping a 50 yard cross field pass, and then decide you want the player that has hit the pass to move forward, then press R2, but you have to do this, BEFORE the ball reaches the next player. It's like a delayed, last minute decision to send the man on a run.

Yup, and just to be clear, in PES you're sending on a run player that has (had) the ball (either with L1+X or with R2). In FIFA, L1 sends nearby teammate without the ball on a run.

I am 100% sure that you could send a player on a run (like on FIFA) by pressing the L1 button, without having the need of passing the ball first. I used to use it all the time in the old PES games. I think every PES game before 2007 had it, and I have no idea why they got rid of it!

If anyone still has an old Ps2 game, ie. PES 5, give it a go - just press L1 whilst you have the ball and watch the team mate ahead of you make a run...

I haven't tried the WE demo but I downloaded the US demo and I'm pretty sure it's different from the Euro version. Like you mentioned, shooting seemed better to me and I also felt more underpressure by the CPU's offense. I also felt movement was a little smoother too but I could've been imaging that. I only played a couple matches on the US version because I've been busy trying to see if I can make myself enjoy FIFA 11, so there could be some more differences as well. First time in years I've been this excited for PES, and at this point based on my time with FIFA 11 and the PES demos I'm imagining myself spending more time with PES this year than FIFA - I might even make it an exclusive relationship!

Thanks. That's kinda what I'd been guessing but wasn't confident. I think I'm still too early into getting comfortable again with PES to take advantage of the R2 runs. Is it a function that you find helpful and used frequently? I imagine it's primary use is for accompanying long passes, when you have time to make a decision?

Yup, and just to be clear, in PES you're sending on a run player that has (had) the ball (either with L1+X or with R2). In FIFA, L1 sends nearby teammate without the ball on a run.

When used with a pass the LB/L1 functions exactly the same in both games. The difference is that LB/L1 can be used in FIFA for off the ball runs.

That function was removed from PES a while ago if I'm not mistaken.

I use it quite frequently to be honest. In PES 2010 I found it to be better than the one-two. The reason for this is I found that sometimes you lost a bit of accuracy on the pass when you initiated a one-two, it was as if the player was concentrating on what he was doing next, i.e. the run. I found it much my effective to play the pass with all fundementals in place to ensure a higher perecentage of accuracy, then pressed R2 to make the run.

I dont think it works like that in PES 2011, but I just have it now as habit, physically and mentally. It's really good if you play medium/long range ball, and then decide you need more support. Sometimes I'll press it a couple of times on the counter in between passes. This set's your players moving forward, and at the same time gives your opponent and their defensive CPU something to think about. Even if you dont play those runners in, you use them by not using them, if you know what I mean.

R2 is a great subtle button for so many different techniques on PES, it's always worth getting comfortable with it.

I hadn't come to the forums for a while - partly cos I don't get the same thrill that I used to previously with PES (imo, WE7 was the best iteration for me....it all went downhill since)

I still have the PES2009 and PES2010 demos on my PS3 with the hope that something will spark and I will love it again....but it was all over the place. The game felt a lot more arcadey - and it seemed to be piss easy to score.

Didn't know that PES2011 was coming out until a few days ago - so, downloaded the demo (third time lucky?). Initial thoughts:

  • Menu's and general presentation is a lot better
  • Champions League license!!
  • I always liked the graphics in PES - even over FIFA in the PS3 and 360. Nothing much has changed imo
  • Camera angle seems to have improved a bit - but the players do seem to be a bit too small
  • Loving the 360 degree and weighted passing...so much more challenging and satisfying when it works
  • Shooting is a lot more difficult - which is good
  • The tricks are a bit fiddly - much prefer the button combinations from before. The whole "linking" system can get a bit unrealistic as that is only a small part of the real game
  • CPU defence is a lot more intelligent....way more satisfying when you finally score. Having said that, it does get annoying when your forward players don't move into the box

Overall, I did find myself generally liking the game a lot more - I did holler when I scored in the demo which is great. It is clear that a few subtle changes here and Konami have significantly improved this over PES2009 and PES2010.

I still think that there are some areas of concern (i.e. tricks, forward movement of players) but overall Konami are (finally!) heading in the right direction. I just wish the classic teams made a comeback (Heroic Holland etc...) and they brought back this classic replay tune:

That is such a legendary tune. I also wish they'd bring back that little tune which used to be over the end game stats and sounded like porno music. I can't remember which game it was so I haven't been able to track it down.

What an anthem! It was remixed for PES2008. I remember two versions being on the game, "Winning Anthem" the original and the 2005 mix. They were the only tracks I kept on the playlist apart from that infuriating "Football SOCCER, all around the world" song that drove my missus up the wall, haw haw.

My wife found the commentators hilarious in the first editions i played (PES1 and 2).
Afterwards when they (very slowly) where beginning to sound a litle bit better, she thought they were by far less funny.

I remember there used to be a line about the weather that they kept on repeating...that was so hilarious...

Haha.
