report from ign:

The latest issue if Famitsu is home to first details and screens for Resident Evil 5. As we reported earlier, Capcom is bringing this next generation survival horror title to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with veteran developer Jun Takeuchi serving as producer.

Since our initial story, we've learned more details on the game. Takeuchi is somewhat vague in his discussion of what we can expect from the title gameplay wise, revealing only that Resident Evil 4, with the wealth of changes made by director Shinji Mikami, caused excitement amongst Capcom's development staff as a whole, particularly those who had worked on Resident Evil for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. Even with the changes, Takeuchi states, there was no mistake that you were playing Resident Evil. We can apparently expect something that, similarly, maintains the taste of Resident Evil while featuring big changes from the traditional play format.
Images shared by the magazine were taken from a two minute high definition video clip in which the game's main character finds himself in the alleys of a desert city, being chased by a mysterious group of enemies. In describing the setting and content of the game, Takeuchi recalls a scene from the film Black Hawk Down, when a US chopper crashes to the ground and is swarmed by natives. The theme of getting out of a tight corner is a staple of the original Resident Evil, and is something that the development staff wants to work on with RE5.

The video does not actually reveal the nature of the enemies that are pursuing the main character. The primary enemy is a new element to the game and it's currently a closely guarded secret. The enemy are meant to come after you in great numbers, conveying the sense of insanity of hoards of natives that Takeuchi took away from Black Hawk Down. We can apparently expect something along the lines of the primary enemy in Resident Evil 4, who spoke a language that you were unable to understand and were more advanced than the zombies that have appeared in previous RE games. Takeuchi and crew are actually working on ways to make the enemy even more expressive this time around.

The development staff is paying extra attention to the game's environments, with Takeuchi stating that one of the tastes of past Resident Evil games was that of the player walking slowly through a dark and damp environment. This time, we can also expect wider, brighter environments, including scenes of intense sunlight.

As expected of a next generation game, RE5 runs in high definition, and one of the things the development staff wanted to do was use the new visual power at its hands to communicate the sense of atmosphere to the player. The images in the trailer clip are meant to convey a sense of high temperature. In fact, heat is a central theme to the game, with Takeuchi suggesting that when it's particularly hot, you'll want to cool down in a cave.

With regards to main character and background setting, Takeuchi states that we should be able to figure out the main character when we consider that members of the development team that created the original Resident Evil are working on this game. This would suggest that the main character pictured in the magazine is Chris (the bearded character in all the screenshots does resemble an older version of Chris).

Takeuchi won't reveal when we'll be able to play Resident Evil 5, only stating that we'll have to wait until the next generation systems are available. He assures us that out of all of Capcom's game projects, this one is getting the most attention, and this is why development will take some time.

A Capcom representative reveals to the magazine that a Tokyo Game Show showing for Resident Evil 5 is not out of the question. IGN is hoping that, with Sony's PlayStation Meeting press conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon and Microsoft's Xbox Summer scheduled for this coming Monday, we'll get a glimpse even sooner than that.

Are you sure that aint CG?
What makes you think a GCN can run graphics like that? You'd only see something like that in an FMV in this generations consoles. Those screenshots from ingame graphics.

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

Oh. How stupid of me.

But still, the PS3 and XBox360 can handle graphics like that.

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

They normally rlease ingame graphics first then a bit of rolling FMV.

At least lets hope that's the case.

Resident Evil 5 screenshots | 03 Feb 2007

The next issue of Famitsu is supposed to contain the first preview of Resident Evil 5 since the Sony Meeting in 2005. It is expected to have the first screenshots of the game.
Some hints from gamefront.de:
Capcom recently spoke with Famitsu Xbox 360 about Biohazard / Resident Evil 5's progress. They confirmed that development would take a little bit longer (as we already knew: see news post below).
Now the interesting part: They also said its possible that they'll show off Resident Evil 5 this year.

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

All those screenshots are Ancient and so is the video look at IGN same screenshots dated july 2005. The video was released sept 2005

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

Those pics are from a vid they made over a year ago there nearly older than me.

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

Would be nice for a multiplayer mission mode. Where we can go through bits of the storyline together.

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

No, but there will be on Wednesday.

Are you sure about that? Hasn't been mentioned along with the other games that Capcom will be covering.

I saw this thread and I was like: Yes! But it's old. Then I was like: Nooo!

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

I'm sure I saw them publically stone someone in that trailer!

Not in good taste considering they stoned a woman in Iran today, was freaky shit though. And I'm glad the lead character looks just as detailed as last year's trailer.

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

Latest News from Famitsu
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/805/805931p1.html

Being able to see new footage of Resident Evil 5 was one of our E3 highlights, even though the new trailer didn't really tell us too much about the game. Enter the latest issue of Famitsu, which is home to an interview in which producer Jun Takeuchi shared some of the details we were looking for.

Takeuchi only provided vague hints about the storyline. As many have guessed from the insignia that appears in the footage, main character Chris Redfield is a member of a group called BSAA. According to Takeuchi, something has happened in the desert area that serves as the game's setting, and BSAA has dispatched Chris to investigate.

Once on the scene, Chris encounters a new form of enemy. Takeuchi described the game's enemies as something of human form that has intelligence. However, the foes are neither zombie nor ganado (in reference to the creatures from RE4).

In addition to the new enemy, a certain girl will make an appearance in the game. She's someone whom fans of the series will recognize. In the full version of the E3 trailer (which will be distributed on Xbox Live and PSN later this month), she appears just briefly, but Takeuchi expects her to have a more significant role in the next trailer (no ETA given on that, unfortunately). In the game proper, she will have a big part both in the story and as part of the gameplay.

On the topic of gameplay systems, Takeuchi admitted to the magazine that the hardest part of development so far has been in mixing new elements with part 4's basic gameplay. For the most part, RE5 will be played from a perspective similar to that of part 4, with Chris appearing on the left side of the screen. However, Takeuchi also promised a big surprise addition that he believes is an obvious evolution for the gameplay.

According to Takeuchi, if, after seeing the E3 trailer, you feel RE5 looks like RE4 now, you'll be left with a completely different impression following the next trailer.

Previously, Takeuchi has spoken about the importance of light in the game. In this latest interview, he offered an example of how light will play a role. Say Chris enters a doorless building. The surroundings are bright and the interior is dark, so it takes Chris a few moments to adapt before he can see. The game will replicate this, along with the opposite effect of going into a bright area after being in the dark for an extended period. This is where you can expect to encounter some of the series' trademark fear, this time from the inability to aim or see.

Takeuchi wouldn't provide a solid release date for RE5, but there seemed to be some consensus of it appearing some time before 2010. It will be a long wait, but then again so was the wait for RE4, and that one turned out pretty good.

Re: Resident Evil 5 FIRST SCREENS! (PS3/XBOX 360!)

Resident Evil 5 does, in fact, feature Chris Redfield

You may have noticed that the non-zombie gentleman in that hot, hot Resident Evil 5 trailer bore a striking resemblance to Chris Redfield, star of Resident Evil and Code Veronica. That's easily explained by the fact that it totally is Chris Redfield. Famitsu got the scoop from producer Jun Takeuchi, who said that RE 5 will take place 10 years after the first in the series, and will follow Chris as he investigates a situation for a group called BSAA.

Chris will face off against some non-zombies in action that Takeuchi said was similar to RE 4 with some new features, including forcing players to allow their eyes to adjust to different light levels when they enter and leave buildings. As demonstrated in the picture above, squinting is the new waggle.
