The English & Scottish Domestic Leagues - Most honest leagues in Europe?

After watching Roma falling over every two minutes last night and Barcelona diving for fun it made me realise that we have the most honest leagues in Europe and maybe the world? Our coaches don't teach our players to dive - it's looked at as cheating here, not a strategy like in Italy or Spain.

What do you think? Discuss.

i'd say that it's easier to see divings in serie a and la liga than in premier league :(

Our coaches don't teach our players to dive...

of course this statement is ridiculous.... there's no need to "teach how to dive".... no coach will ever do it

i'd say that the problem is th ref. english refs are known for their tendency to use the whistle rarely. they prefere not to stop the game often (and i like this attitude). So there's no use to dive (even better..... it's quite "dangerous" to dive).

in serie a and la liga u will see the refs stopping the game for fouls that "wouldn't be fouls" in premier league (we could say that the british way to ref is more "permissive")..... so it happens that italian and spanish players are more "inclined" to try to take advantage from this situation..... that's all action -reaction.

i'm quite sure that if our refs would use their whistles less, italian (and spanish) players would "adapt" to this situation.... and we wouldn't see so many divings anymore.

EDIT:

After watching Roma falling over every two minutes last night...

that's not what i saw, btw. i saw 2 (bad) divings (by pizarro and mancini)...... then i saw the ref loosing his coolness and startiing whistling each time he saw a roma player falling.... no matter what. Totti's yellow card was ridiculous. cris went looking for totti's leg (and u can see it from the replay)....... and this happened a lot of times yesterday.....
btw i don't blame the ref for this.... it's roma's fault; they dived two times in 10 minutes.... so the ref lost his "trust" in roma players... it's quite "natural".

Traditionally, the Spanish and Italian leagues have been known for diving because their teams contained more players that could put away a free kick (South Americans). The foreign influence has maybe increased the diving in the Prem but it's not just them diving. English players dive too. The way the league is now, if you lose 4 or 5 games you're fucked. The pressure is on and if you have a free kick specialist, there are bound to be divers to try and get free kicks. Part of the game I'm afraid.

Just recently, everyone has been reporting the bad things about football and it's controversy that sells newspapers. Every goal is scrutinised to see if it was onside or there is something to complain about. Let's just enjoy a fucking great league, highlight the great football and fuck the complaining off.

GO AWAY ROMA OWN ALL sorry for the spam >:-(

did you need to post the same thing in the Roma thread

but for once you are'nt bashing the SPL

It's beautiful when we see most of English fans talking about diving but when he comes to his team they have all the same excuse: "It wasn't a dive, he was just clever" or "Yeah and what? All players do that, why we can do it too?"

'nuff said

No mate you 're making a mistake, when one of their player dives they say"it wasn't a dive, the intend was there so it's a clear penalty, no matter if there isn't any contact... )

I agree that their can be sets of double standards but I cant agree that our outlook is the same.

If a players is charging in at you and their is now way he is going to get the ball knock the ball away and take it for what you can get. Unless I am mistaken this is now a fair way to win a free kick anyway, if the intent is their. That is the only situation I would say is acceptable to diving, falling, hitting the ground, whatever you want to call it.

Gilardino's is the perfect example of what we hate, having no reason to fall other than the sake of diving. His example is great due to the distance he was away when he done it. I know that is a rare situation given the distance of where any challenge could have been to the place he fell. My point is falling for no reason is wrong. Their was no intent against Gilardino on this challenge. Players going down like they are shot, attacked or stabbed are out of order IMO. This is the anti football, not the way some teams play i.e. Blackburn, Liverpool. This is not football to try and win a game using dishonest tactics. Some teams may not have pretty tactics but it is honest.

I will say this out of all honesty, when Celtic lost to Porto I had a great night knowing they were beat, what added was the way Porto conducted themselves. The time wasting by diving rolling about crowding the ref. But the only reason I enjoyed this was because this was happening to Celtic. I never agreed with it for any other reason. My honest opinion is that this was out of order for a team to act. If my biased glasses were not on and it were against Lyon or Bolton, Man City etc.. I would have been appalled.

The most annoying thing about this night was the fact that Porto didn't have to do this to help them win. They were a good enough team, they already took apart a decent Lazio side in the semi's. Though this is just the continental mentality. Even when their are great footballing sides, Roma, Milan, Benfica and even Chelsea (all are examples they are not all the worst but just to make a point) they have players that play the game a different way. It can be very frustrating to watch when you see a player fall roll over 3 times then ask for assistance. Then you see the replay and their was not even a player anywhere near him.

I don't actually know the point of this argument as it will never really change. We all have far to many inbuilt views on football that will be hard to remove from ourselves.

English/British mentality of playing football the "old" way will not change much. We like a physical game of football. We hate players rolling about its just our mentality. Not to say that everyone in Britain is like this just more than their is less. The same way that outside the UK a good part of Europe think its a great thing to con the ref. Again not everyone will feel this way but it will happen.

What gets me, I can see people responding with attacks on England, but to answer a question do you agree that its right either side? Is this the way football should be played? No doubt to win a penalty that could put your team through to the next round in said cup or league etc. would be great but to lose it would be horrible. You would sit and argue the point that you as a club and the ref as a job/role where cheated would you not??

i do agree with you it was stupid dive and no reason to it but there was Roughness from defenders
what makes him angry and want to use this Roughness for him

If Gilardino fell when he was near the defender this argument would not be happening.

I prefer diving rather than the brutal tackes in the EPL, most of them directly to injure the opponent, thanks to the worst referees in the world. They always say "play on"... maybe if someone get's injured permanently, the aggressor gets booked. But they always get away with it.

And that doesn't happen in either Spain or Italy.

Fair play.

England does have the worst referees in the world, in my opinion anyway.

I am stuggling to think of a good one, but It would probably be the same for most countries...

There are some awful divers in Britian, the funny thing is no one really mentions it. :)

I don't agree , even in europe you'll find worse referees . ask the frenchs about ligue1's referees .
anyway even if diving exists also in england I reckon that the fans there hate it more than anyway . It's also something I appreciate in scoteland . I've seen a player scold his own team mate for diving , the diver was benjelloune (hibs) from morocco and he reported that to moroccan media saying the fact that his own team mates weren't happy with a dive was a very good lesson that changed his way of thinking and respect the scottish even more for that (added to the fair play their supporters have) .

Worse than Malta, Greece, .. I could go on.

Maybe it is fair to say the EPL has worse ref's than Italy..

I have noticed a pattern Kel thinks it Germany, Robin_007 thinks its Holland....

OTT statement the Premiership doesn't have the best but certainly doesn't have the worst.

@Spitfire these happen in football throughout every league to say its only a Premiership thing is naive.

To name one player alone.....

Lol at porto playing with 14 men.

There's an old saying in Argentina... about buying a Brazilian shirt and the guy at the shop asking you "what will you take: home shirt, away shirt, goalkeeper shirt or referee?"
