The Movies Thread

Lol Green Inferno is trash and idiotic but i have enjoyed it a lot :D
That made me remind of Green Room. Its rather kind of a thriller but still creepy to me.

Yeah it is kinda trash but I love trash horror done well. Eli Roth is fantastic at that niche: Knock Knock, Cabin Fever, Hostel... all very good trash.

Green Room I thought was decent too. A bit overrated though, not sure why it got more love than other similar films tbh. But its good for what it is. If you liked it you may want to check out the directors other film Blue Ruin. It's around the same quality level as Green Room

I rewatched on TV the movie "Fractute", with Antony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling.
It must be the 5th or 6th time i am watching this and i love really this movie. The mind games between the two of them and the law duel is awesome.
What i noticed fo first time in today's rewatch was in the last scene with the second-final judge, where Hopkins has a group of attorneys, that the president-judge of the court, was the same guy that signed the certificates to unplug his wife from the life support in the hospital. And Hopkins thanked him calling him by his given name, which is implied that he knows him in a relation level.

JoJo Rabbit is one of the best films I've seen in a long time. If you don't take some kind of joy away from it, I think the modern world may have eaten your soul.

If you're half-interested from the plot overview (little German boy living in nazi Germany, who loves Hitler, has a silly child's version of him as an imaginary friend, but seriously embodies everything the nazis stand for)... Don't read up anything else about it. Don't even watch a trailer. Just go and see it.

Was n't Uncut Gems snubbed from being nominated, the biggest unfairness of this year? Adam Sandler's acting, whom i didn't also personally like cause of his filmography, was a true revelation in this movie. Even Kevin Garnett was very good for acting first time. I have seen other athletes in the past in movies, Jordan, O'Neal, Kevin Durant and they were all awkward and cringe on acting. Garnett had a very decent and bearable performance. But the true "uncut gem" of the movie was Adam Sandler. He proved that he is not only capable of comedic, b-movie, trash films.

Also reading the premise i thought that it is not something unique as a scenario, but the direction was so unique that created a continuous anxiety-suspense during the movie.

Adam Sandler is a good actor, he just plays in a lot of shit comedies, his performance in Punch Drunk Love is great, as is the performance of the late Philip Seymore Hoffman. I have yet to check out Uncut Gems, looking forward to it.

Yes this is sad. Of course he makes a lot of money from the shit comedies, but they leave him with bad reputation. And he has proved that he can make extra ordinary performances, if the set-up helps him.
It is the reverse from Antony Hopkins, that after a majority of good movies, he played Odin in Thor, that was out of his shoes as a setup.

i liked Uncut Gems a lot. despite you would expect the ending and despite despising the main character...or lets say everyone in the movie :D....at the end i was rooting myself for the main character sitting on the edge of my seat and made me second thought what can happen in this movie and so i was a bit of surprised still by the finale

and of course the acting and story telling is top notch. only disliked the soundtrack. im already full of these 80's synthwave music in every movie now....it seems like no one is getting that Stranger Things takes place in the 80-90s thats why the music...

DOCTOR SLEEP

Well this movie is the shit. Dont expect the Shining but its the best mistique horror movie since The Mist. Go watch it, i recommend the directors cut. This is a proper Stephen King movie, a movie of the 90's SK tv movie era but with great acting and visuals. As i was watching i was like "damn...IT should have been like this..."

I liked Dr Sleep quite a bit, it follows the book to the letter until about two thirds in, then there is a WTF moment, kind of letting those who read the book know that all bets are off at this point. The ending is very different to the book, but it does walk the line of being a sequel to the original Shining and an adaptation of the book quite well. The book is certainly not one of King's best but I would still recommend it to anyone who has only seen the movie.

edit: Didn't even know there was a director's cut, I will have to check that out.

P.S. Rebecca Ferguson though...

Im watching that version with my brother now. Actually it is...episodic? The theatrical cut didnt have episodes right?! Anyway full 3hours long this way, it should have been on Netflix rather. The movie flopped heavilyat the box office although its a great movie.

Also i watched Jojo Rabbit recently. What a lovely little movie. Damn ...the acting is outstanding....everyone is outstanding in it.... i just couldnt believe it. Taika "Wes Anderson" Titi directed a heartwarming, funny, tragic little movie.

Watched Creed the other day, was quite impressed with it. Like a remake of the original, but still part of the series. Stallone is really great in it, not surprised that he got an Oscar nom. The one take fight in the middle of the film is really impressive, which is why I find the last fight a bit of a let down, as it is the typical Rocky fight of two guys hammering each other but still staying up for way longer than would seem to be humanly possible. Michael B and Tessa Thompson are both great too and all three play well off each other, so I am curious to see Creed II as well, even if it seems to have gone into full silly mode, with the son of Drago being the opponent. Also, not a Coogler film.

Rewatched a couple of Bond films, Quantum and Spectre. Not Casino, cause I have seen it many times and I still consider it the best of the DC ones, and not Skyfall because I still say it's overrated. It's not bad, but hardly the shiny beacon that many claim.
Quantum is an odd movie, it's kind of like an old Bond film with Bourne editing. Many of the action scenes are dead impressive but ruined by fast cuts. Dialogue is daft but that makes sense as it was made during a writers strike. The airplane chase near the end almost makes up for the whole movie as it just looks real. The maneuvers of the airplanes might be made up, I don't know, but it looks incredible. I don't mind Quantum, honestly. Third place in the DC run, for me, after Casino and Skyfall.

Then, there is bloody Spectre. If Quantum is odd, Spectre is almost farcical. I don't mind the relaxed way this movie is shot, it is pretty much on the other side of the spectrum(!) to Quantum of Solace. There are impressive scenes and the fist fight between bond and not green Drax is outstanding. The problem is, this movie makes absolutely no sense. It's a Bond movie after all but the dumb scale has literally been broken here due to the amount of sillyness.
This is where QoS comes back in. It was a good end to the Casino Royale storyline, and even with one of the main villains escaping capture, Skyfall was pretty much a new thing altogether. But Spectre just had to go and try to tie the whole thing together. And tie Bond to Blofeld. In the most far-fetched bullshit garbage storyline imaginable. Actually, I might be wrong about that, maybe it is a neat twist, but the thing was, both in the cinema and now I was tearing hair over this tangled mess I was witnessing, so I probably missed the sheer brilliance of it all.

Nah I am pretty sure it's just daft. Goes on for way too long as well, Blofeld barely escapes with his life from his hideout but goes straight back to London to hang up pictures of every character of the last 3 bond films just to f*ck with Bond. Like that will somehow be worse than literally drilling holes into his skull. Ties his lady friend up at M's office with a bomb, and procedes to watch from a helicopter. Bond is smart and knows there is a safety net at the bottom floor so he just jumps with her down a hole. This makes sense in a way, these things are set up for safety. But they would have been set up at higher floors as well.

I'm going on for way to long about this. Most Bond movies are pretty dumb after all. But they are usually entertaining enough to make you look past it. Spectre, dead last for me on the Daniel Craig list. The fact that they seem to be still hanging on to the same plot threads in No Time to Die is... not great.

I strongly agree with you in all aspects.

Casino Royale is the best Bond film, ever.
Skyfall is overrated, and I prefer Quantum of Solace over it, despite its flaws.
Spectre is a disgrace to the whole franchise. I like to think that it never happened.

I love Taika's humor (watch What We Do In The Shadows, the movie). The kid actors were outstanding, even the supporting ones(Yorki is my fav). The ending is really lovely, made me tear up a bit and the movie got a Wes Anderson influence all over it.

The Old Guard on Netflix is not bad. I mean, if you have seen 8-10 movies in your life, you will be able to predict literally everything that happens, before it happens, but it is still quite entertaining. Charlize Theron as a great action star.

Also on Netflix, The Castle of Cagliostro is an old animated movie from Hayao Miyazaki, one of his first, I believe, before his Studio Ghibli days. I never saw it before and I had an absolute blast watching it. Gave me serious childhood cartoon vibes, even the music reminded me a bit of the Once Upon a Time series, although it is a different composer. I would have gone mental over this, had I seen it about 30 years ago. One sign of the times is that the characters smoke. A lot. Like many of the Ghibli films, I will be going back to this one in the future.

TENET
- Nolan quality all over the board although half way through the movie lost me, the rules and any possible threat (besides the main one) wasnt clear at all for me so i couldnt get so excited about the events or fear for the characters. EDIT: yeah characters were weak AF, only the blond women had a real character and character ark.

The Youtubers and gamesmen Kinda Funny have been reviewing films for a while now, it's a fun podcast you can easily find on any Podcast service under Kinda Funny.
Alongside their latest series, reviewing Studio Ghibli Films, I have been watching and rewatching them, as they are all now on Netflix UK.

I already mentioned The Castle of Cagliostro, which is a solid 8.5 for me, but so far I have also watched
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - 8 - A gem. Great adventure.
Castle in the Sky - 6.5 - a bit unfairly judged, not sure why it didn't hit me like the previous movies. Still good.
My Neighbor Totoro - 8 - This movie is pure mood. Plot wise, it is barely a movie. But watch it, you will feel better afterwards.
Kiki's Delivery Service - 7 - Another fun one, but maybe a tad forgettable.
Porco Rosso - 6 - The weakest so far, can't decide if it is for adults or kids.
Princess Monoke - 9.5 - This movie is INSANE. Seriously, It is so wild. I saw it once before but appreciated it much better this time. I gasped multiple times. An absolute thriller.
Next Up, Spirited away.
