The Retro-PES Corner

Don't you think the cpu is too direct, ball in feet? I love Pes 13 "environment" but for as much I tried, I can't get over the AI constantly trying to dribble and going forward regardless. I've even tried Matt10's old global editing but without much luck, other than messing with the gameplay tool (again, without too much luck).

Would love to know if somebody else had more success!

Can't say I have noticed that, or that it's bothered me yet.
I'm still trying to find the best config using the Gameplay Tool, between shot power, ball speed, AI level, Animation speed, general speed, etc. So I am yet to submerge into any deeper game mode. Still want to update some faces and stuff too.

I am on the same train with @Madmac79 in pes2013.Everybody says that it is the best responsive pes, that they can transfer whatever idea they have in mind on the pitch, but i personally cannot compete anything above professional difficulty.
And i do not know if the sliders that i left untouched-grey in Jenkeys tool, still affect the game or the default values are applied, cause the last time i used pes2013 in top player i could not connect more than 3 consecutive short passes even to free players, with pass assist level 1.
Possibly i am very bad on this version (2013).I basically have the problem ,in professional i win every match after some games,in top player CPU mops the floor with my face, hands down.

@sniglet Glad you're still enjoying it :) Yours and the otherkits added so much to it as well. :) Funnily enough me and Miguel were talking about how great it would be if we could play it online. There'd be some great games I think. After looking at the pes6.es website I noticed that they have lots of lobbies for all manner of different patches and it turns out it is possible. Although we might need someone to set it up and of course provide the server - not sure if they would be able to add it to the pes6.es server and I wouldn't presume to expect that of course. Thanks to @robao from that site he has pointed me to some instructions on the pesretro site. I am not registered there and could not read it as it was all in spoilers and they wouldn't open. Miguel however posted there when we released Amador so he kindly translated it all and also found a video on you tube (also in Spanish) where you can see the process or most of it at least. It doesn't seem to0 complicated in fact at all but for some reason I have a problem running DKZ studio which is needed.

I thought I might post that up on the Amador thread and see if anybody would take a stab at getting the files. It's basically three bin files from the original 0_text that you insert into the kitserver/dat/0_text folder and apparently as long as you all have those three and presumably the proper .exe then you should be good to go to play online via a server. I presume those three files are where the original player data/stats are kept and where the original OF is produced from when you first start a brand new PES.

Amador online sounds like a good time to me! If you can figure it all out I’d be happy to play a few games. Fingers crossed somebody knows what’s what about all the server stuff. It’s certainly beyond me. :D

So, PES 3 eh? After reading some of this thread (and the bumped @fmicablues7 thread) I thought I'd give it a go. Turns out, it's a lot of fun and can work well and look good after a few tweaks.

Managed to get the internal resolution up to 2560x1440 by using a nice bit of software for retro gaming called dgVoodoo. Read this to find out how and if you have any problems or questions, let me know. This should also work for any other retro PES titles that don't have the internal resolution option from kitserver.

This also fixes the worst of the stuttering which can happen under Windows 10.

1. In PES 3 set screen mode to 'Window' via the in-game Screen settings menu. Not sure if this is necessary and makes step 5 pointless - 'Full screen' is untested.

2. Download this: https://mega.nz/#!NlRWhaBD!uPQVrAoehKY9kCOHDkN5pBbLRPM3SUO5-dejE4Bc0Ck

3. Drop all files from the .zip into the root of your PES install (same directory as pes3.exe).

4. Edit kserv.cfg so it includes: aspect.ratio = 1.78, screen.width = 1920, screen.height = 1080; or whatever your screen resolution/aspect ratio is.

5. Add pes3.exe to Borderless Gaming (https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming/releases).

This is what it should look like - watch on Youtube for full 1080p60 goodness:

@mattmid @miguelfcp Currently playing through an all Scotland League with Fife. Amador is still great. :) I'll do some more work on it at some point I'm sure.

that patch has some bug with faces on certain teams.

this one is more up do date: http://peswe.com/fm/showthread.php?t=11376

@slamsoze @Chuny Glad to see you guys are getting into PES 2013, one of my all time favourites on the last gen before the sad slate wiping of the Fox engine exodus the series underwent. Had a little dabble with it earlier in the week and i'll get a few clips up later. The AI as well as your teams intelligence is immersive and incredible. Loved the players facial expressions too even if they were a little ridiculed at the time.

Found a site while looking for some PES 2008 files, a humerous look at the PES 2008 soundtrack and the series' transition from the identifyable Japanese techno and drum & bass towards a more commercial Pop Punk sound before we got the incredible Indie rock of PES 2010-2013. There's even some samples to listen to from the game and it's a strange delve into the mysterious in house soundtrack that crosses between cringe and straight up cheese.

Here's some clips of a game i played last week on PES 2008 PC.

2019-02-08_13.39.17.jpg

Picture doesn't do it much justice but managed to get the game to run in 4K on PC and it still looks pretty good. Some player faces are clearly reused from PES6 on the Xbox 360 but at least it's all got one consistent art direction and i kinda like it. Has a cartooneycharm to it.

@MadbaLL Thanks for sharing that WE7 patch, very curious about that game and looking forward to trying it, it's my first ever PES game and i haven't played it since 2004!

Have had a look at all the Windows 10 game compatibility lists and wouldn't you know, none of them mention any early PES games either running ok or not. All I can see is some people online saying PES 2011 will not run on Windows 10.

Worrying ?

@WhoAteMeDinner I have no stuttering in any of them. I did originally have a bit on pes6 when windows 10 first came out but I think it was some kind of driver/win 10 problem on that driver version because at the time there was a fix (on here somewhere) that you put in the pes6 folder and it fixed it - something to do with direct x) anyway since then using all the different patches that Sany made they don't have that thing in the folder and I've never had any stutter since so I think it was just a driver thing for that version.

So to sum up with windows 10 I can say from first hand experience, original versions of pes5 and pes6 I have no stutter. I have no stutter from the pes3 (wendetta?) patch and any other Sany patch that I have downloaded. Whether that's the same for others who knows. For what it's worth my graphics cards is nvidia on my desktop computer. When I played pes6 on my laptop 4-5 yrs ago it just had an integrated graphics card and ran no problem at all, although that was windows 7 at that stage.

A week ago I was going for a PS2 gaming session, after months of not playing anything on the console, but had no idea what to play. Said to myself, let's roll with whatever I had left on the tray, and turns out, it was the glorious PES08 PS2.

A few guys here might remember my Generations Mode challenge with the ML Defaults on the Master League mode.
Generations Mode: As you start with the ML defaults, you can only acquire a newgen/regen (choosing from the “newcomers” group) when one of your players retires. Also, you can’t sell or let go of any player in this save unless, of course, he retires.
I had put in 8 seasons of save, and quit playing it after conquering the treble: League, Cup and WEFA Championships. However, this time I felt compelled to reload the save, check out the team and how the players evolved, and maybe play a few matches just for the sake of it.

Well, turns out, I can't play PES08 PS2 "just for the sake of it" this game pulls you in and before you realize it, you've just played half a season without noticing :D Also, it's fair to say that I'm really attached to this squad, and playing with these guys is always fun.

I'm now close to the end of Season 9 and, coincidentally, not only it has been the most exciting season of them all but also one of the most exciting I've ever had on any ML on any PES. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say someone or something is doing this on purpose to pull me back in to this save. I must've played around 30 matches or so this season; well, I wouldn't be exaggerating to say that probably only 5 of them were boring. Besides those, every single one was either really interesting or an instant classic. I'm dead serious. Almost everything that could happen on a football match has happened to me this season.

Midway through S9 I was already far away from Benfica and Galatasaray, the top 2 of the league, and just 3 points away from the relegation spots. Remember, we'd won the treble last season! Fortunately, our cup runs were much brighter, as we were able to clinch the 1st place of a WEFA group with North London, Bayern Munchen and Real Madrid (!!!) - with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss (0-4 at home vs Bayern...). Currently, we're on the WEFA Championships semifinals (vs Galatasaray) and also we're on the D1 Cup semifinals vs...Galatasaray!

On the 1st leg of the WEFA quarter-finals, we met Liverpool...ahem, Merseyside Red at home and this happened...
jcKBFAW.jpg

It could've easily been 10/11-0 with the clear chances we created...
On the 2nd leg, I play all the reserves and ageing (as in, "goddamn old") underachievers like Burchet, Ceciu and Stremer...we were winning 2-0 when our 18-year-old debutant keeper forgets we were playing football, not american football, and tackles the quarterback...I mean, the attacker, while he didn't even have the ball. Instant-red-card, penalty, and I have to play Lothar (Lethal Lothar), a guy who literally hasn't played a competitive football match in more than 4 years! Fernando Torres takes the penalty, Lothar defends it, holds on to the ball, and then turns his back on the game, faces the Liverpool fans behind the goal and spends a good 7/8 seconds standing still, staring them down, with me pressing all the buttons to see if he could carry on with the match :D fortunately he did, and on the 20 min. he played, he not only didn't concede but defended a couple of very difficult shots.
Certainly the best of the 6 total matches he played in 9 years so far. Zamenhof shed a tear.

As for the league, we picked up the pace on the latter half of the season and are now 3rd with 5 matches until the end of the season. Benfica is 1st and is 6 points ahead, while Galatasaray is 2nd, 5 points away. Though it seems we'll clinch a WEFA qualification spot - and we certainly had to fight for it -, our chances at qualifying directly to the best of the WEFA competitions are not quite so good, as only the top 2 of the league get that perk.
We still have a match against Benfica so I wouldn't say we're out of the title race either, but I believe the European Superleague will see another winner this year.

Anyhow, here's a couple of interesting screens.
- Ceciu became the oldest player to play a match for ML United, surpassing Espimas and Iouga, I think, who were both 40 when they played their last match.
LGNpYDi.jpg
Given he'll retire by the end of this season (alongside a 38-year-old Burchet), I don't know when this milestone will be beaten...if ever.

- Gutierrez became the first ML United player to score 200 goals for the club!
fNZdevr.jpg

...and is well-positioned to become the first to get 300 appearances for the club as well. Some say his motivation is the fact that he had been cut off of @Madmac79's roster on his PES11 save, and he used that rage to get back at his previous manager and show the world what he's really made of.

Also, paging @WhoAteMeDinner...I had a match in which I couldn't field two natural strikers (injuries + red cards + accumulated fatigue + accumulated yellow cards...) so I said f*ck it, this one's for Dinner, I'll field in Sousa there. One goal, two assists. I see no reason why this should work but goddamn it, you were right and it did :D

Last but not least, given two players will retire by the end of the season, according to the rules of the Generations Mode challenge, I'll be able to sign two newcomers. Our starting-11 is peaking, as many are reaching the 28-32 years of age, and most of them are not evolving stats anymore. I have to start thinking about a short-term replacement for Stein (34 years old) and a left-footed wingback/sidemidfielder/sideback to replace Ruskin. Another CB wouldn't be so bad too.

@sniglet , how much stuttering or lag is there in general on older PES games on the PC or lap top ?

Seems to be a YMMV thing. I have pretty bad stuttering in all retro PES games, despite having a fairly beefy PC (Xeon E3-1231 v3 @3.4GHz, 32GB RAM, Nvidia 1060 6GB and running off a Samsung SSD).

Sometimes this little wrapper helps (converts DX8 to DX9) but sometimes it just stops the game from loading at all. Works a treat on PES6: http://enbdev.com/download_convertor_dx8todx9.htm

Otherwise I use dgVoodoo which helps in PES 3/4/5 (and equivalent WE).

@mattmid Do you use Windows 10 Pro or Home? I'm on Pro and get stuttering in most if not all retro PES game AFAIK. I'm on an Nvidia card - maybe AMD is better?

Edit: Just read you're on Nvidia too. Weiiiird.

@sniglet That's the fix I had to run when windows 10 first installed.

I have Windows 10 Home. For comparison mine is AMD FX6350 @3.90ghz, 8gb ram, Nvidia GeForce GTX 760.

Here's my nvidia control panel settings for pes6 in case that might be of any help for you...

Oh and I run it on 3840*2160 as well and it's lovely and smooth.

Awesome retelling, @miguelfcp .
What I love about long careers like your with 2008, is that the whole save become his own living world sim with his random mythos and situations composed of particular team compositions and such.

By the way, tell Gutierrez it was only business- I truly wish him the best for the rest of his career .

@mattmid @WhoAteMeDinner

So I did a bit of Googling and one suggestion for fixing crap performance in older games was to install the DirectX 9.0c Redistributable (June 2010) and force some old DX drivers into Windows 10. Doing it via DXdiag doesn't work as it only checks for the latest, not legacy, versions.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=8109

Lo and behold (and touch wood) any stuttering issues seem to be gone without using any fancy wrappers. PES 3 and 6 both seem to be working fine. Will do some more testing and post back soon.

@sniglet Thanks, that's good to know, I'll save that page in case of any future problems :) In fact as it's microsoft I'll download it now and keep it otherwise I just know they'll only have taken the page down if I do have need of it!

@WhoAteMeDinner
My laptop only has internal Intel "Graphics" it's an i3 5005U. Old Pes games run usually well. Some things i noticed/tweaked:
1. In kitserver, under "kload.cfg" i always change the internal resolution to to a smaller one = 1280x720 (720p) instead of 1080p

2. I start the "settings.exe" up (where u configure the controller) and change on the first window to "medium" or "low" - this is only for the ingame menu-quality sharpness etc.

If i don't change these two things, the game can run well - but the pc runs hot as hell very quickly with MAXIMUM fan! With these tweaks it's on normal operating temperture.

Also, if you have a patched game with lots of stuff, mostly stadiums. The game can have occasional stutters. For example i am playing "PES 6 Phoenix Patch 2015" from @Sany023 installer. It has everything from kits to faces etc. EXCEPT the stadiums ...so that's perfect for my laptop ;-)

@mattmid , @sniglet , @Hoshii and @Chuny , thanks guys for all the retro-pes compatibility information and fixes for Windows 10 and PCs and laptops. Just watched all of @sniglet 's PES 3 video as well and looks great even though as my eyesight is terrible and 560 pixels on an NTSC 60 HZ mode screen was always fine for me and made the ball move smooth as silk across the pitch.

Just looks and feels different to the Playstation 2 version, only PES game I ever played not on a Playstation console was PES 2009 and it was a completely different type of gaming experience.

PES Puritans are allergic to new gadgets I guess......

@miguelfcp , miggy pal, how could you doubt the Dinner's player advice ?

:NONO::NONO::NONO:

On your PES 2008 Playstation 2 version and Sousa specifically, I would think the Portuguese "Man for all positions" (move over Macco), will do even better with regular game time and player development. Sousa with ten seasons of player development in PES 6 was the best dribbler in the league (Dribble speed and technique stats of 96 each). Now from what I have played of later PES editions, defenses are even harder to unlock as the speed of the game is slower, so having a brilliant dribbler should be even more important and Sousa will never be that quick, so the slower pace of the game in PES 2008 will suit him more.

And btw, I played a very attacking 4 - 3 - 3 formation with Sousa in the central striker position flanked by two specialist wing forwards (note not SMFs).

:BSCARF::BSCARF::BSCARF:

@WhoAteMeDinner: You're absolutely right. Sousa has now played as a centre-back, wingback (both sides), DMF, CMF, AMF and striker. All that's left for him to experience is playing as a goalkeeper :D
For the guys who don't know him, he's a natural CMF but he develops his stats very well, becoming an all-around player...but perhaps most important of all, as we've discussed here before, is his Teamwork stat (has 96 in my save now). A guy with such high football IQ and his solid, balanced statsheet can play everywhere really.

He's not yet on my "default" starting-11 because of my loyalty to Van den Berg - despite his much weaker statsheet, the man is a beast; but still Sousa is getting a lot of playing time across all positions, and is often the first to be subbed in during matches, turning him into a kind of "12th player".

I can imagine the dynamics of your 4-3-3 with Sousa up front, having all the freedom to roam about and create scoring chances for both wingers.

When I got him as a 18-year-old newcomer, I predicted he'd turn into a kind of "regista", a Pirlo-type of player, dictating the play from deep...but now he can really adapt to whatever role.

@Madmac79 Are you playing the default PES2011 game or are you using a patch ?
Your take on this game give me the urge to try it again. Last time i played it, i found the cpu a bit too weak to play against, especially offensively. I was playing with the out-of-the-box game, though.

Could be a number of things ...

I honestly wasn’t sure how well it would work just posting that little zip of files. You could try downloading the program itself and making a new config file on your system. If you have any issues then let me know: http://dege.freeweb.hu/

Edit: These are my settings. Might be worth playing around with them, or just copy them and then copy over the file 'dgVoodoo.conf' to your PES directory.

dgVoodoo-PES.jpg

If you’re installing because of stuttering or bad FPS then you could try just installing the directx 9.0c package I posted earlier. It really fixed my issues and I don’t use dgVoodoo on any pes games now.

I already tried to install the default dgvoodoo. Can't launch either.
I don't have any stuttering issues, i just wanted to upscale the internal resolution.

Default.

BUT, there are a couple of things to consider:

-Starting a ML with the defaults, immediately puts you on a steeper difficulty curve
-I try not to force plays on the sides and crosses, where the cpu is objectively a bit weaker, but I only use them when a plausible action flow takes life (not that it is a granted goal anyway).

That said, to me it's a good challenge, and I've had a very good number of games that felt impossible to win even when I forced my hand. Maybe I'm just not that good, so I don't know.
I think that if you are just behind a pure challenge, tho, there are way more unforgiving retro-pes (12 and 13 on top of them all to me).

Back at it ...

Well i played a lot of PES 5 on my "comeback"... and i was not bad! But i didn't know this game had "HIDDEN stats"!

If your player has high stats at JEDI-Force he can do magic things! Just watch, i saw the cross coming from miles away and was running towards the ball, not to mention i was infront of the opponent, but his JEDI stats were just simply higher then mine so was left there hanging... Just :APPLAUD:

Just watch:

Of course i know this "feature" from older PES games, but personally i have left PES 5 for good now and i found a new home in PES 6 which suits me (and my nerves) waaaaaaay better. Beautiful game. I play on "Top Player" difficulty, i wonder how the "Superstar" difficulty compares in this game

... btw what is the homie @geeeeee doing... ?
