For me, Friedrich was better than Mertesacker. But they were both good. So Per wasn't even Germany's best defender imo. But a good player nonetheless and at beginning he was getting some unjust criticism.

Never really been a fan of him, but for me Mertsacker was the defender of the tournie, thought he was outstanding. Friedrich was excellent too.
