Who to root for?

As the upcoming football season starts, I need to decide who to follow. I just started really getting into soccer, but there aren't many chances to see games here in America. I want to follow as many leagues as possible, there just seem to be too many!! I suppose I should just pick a team from each major league and follow them that way. But who should I pick?

Any help on this subject would be nice.

Well it depends if your a glory supporter then Man U the Arse and Chelscum are your best bet as they will be in the tital race at the end. if not then any teams out of: The mighty Spurs, Newcastle , Man City, Bolton, Everton or if your realy desperate the villans or charlton.......but then again knowones that desperate :)

Well, whos your favourite player? Think of it that way
Who do you enjoy watching?

Thats why Milan is like my second favourite team.
I support Man Utd cuz I was brought up to support them but if I had a choice, it would have been Milan cuz I like their players.

Yeah I think it's important to have a favorite team in other leagues, just makes it more exciting when you watch Football Italia or Revista de La Liga. For me, prefered foregin team have gotta be:

Italy: Fiorentina (First Italian city I visited, so beautiful. Plus I really got into them when they had Batigol, RuiCosta, Chiesa and Todlo in nets. They were sick back then!)

Spain: Barcelona (Another quality city, plus they always seem to get exciting players out of relative obscurity like Saviola and Maxi Lopez. Plus Ronnie of course, and Xavi is imo the most underrated midfielder outside of Spain.)

France: Monaco (Le boss' old club! Plus it's such a mad little principality, only 1 square mile but shit loads of playboys, Ferraris and casinos! Quality! Their stadium is tiny but has real character, just like the country.)

Germany: B. Dortmund (Always struck me as the 'Arsenal of Germany', frequently finishing second in the league and occasionally nicking the odd title here and there, just like us in the 90's! Amoroso was quality in his day too.)

Dunno bout the rest.

Well, I can't stand teams that just throw inordinate amounts of money at their problems (such as the NY Yankees in baseball). So teams like Man U and Real Madrid are probably out of the question.

I guess my favorite player is DaMarcus Beasley for PSV Eindhoven. I like watching Kaka play. I haven't had too much of a chance to watch games lately since there are no leagues going (and nothing on TV). I think I like Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, but just from WE/PES.

What about these teams (mighty Spurs, Newcastle , Man City, Bolton, Everton)? What would be the advantages to each?

Ah good old Man City the inherent story of highs! lows! and shoot yourself in the foot moments! Unbeaton agaist the top 4 teams in the league but yet we lose agaist West Brom without them having a single shot in 90 mins of play! We are the most consistanly unconsistant side in the league! Always great entertainment!

If you like Kaka, watch Milan. Milan also has the current best player of the world (Ballon D'Or) which is Shevchenko. Milan also has one of the most famous players in the world, Maldini - who every Italian in the US would know.

Okay, think I almost have it.

England- Either Man City or Newcastle
Spain- Barcelona
Germany- Borussia Dortmund
France- Olympique Marseille
Austria- Rapid Wien
Italy- AC Milan
Holland- PSV Eindhoven

Pretty nice list, I think.

Rexrex, there is plenty of opportunity to catch the big leagues in the US provided you have a satellite dish or a decent cable provider.

Fox Soccer Channel shows the English Premier League and the German Bundesliga primarily. Their nightly new show is essential viewing to keep you updated on all the leagues and highlights. I watch it religiously and it taught me a shitload about the internaional scene.

GolTV shows the Spanish and the Italian leagues and only shows games where the big teams are playing (Milan, Inter, Roma, Juventus, Real MAdrid, Barcelona, Valencia, etc).

The EPL is the best league to watch cuz its physical and fast, IMO. PLus with Chelski, Arsenal, ManU and Liverpool, there are plenty of big clashes. And its not uncommon for a bottom tier team to topple a giant.

I thought Ronaldinho was the best player in the world.

I like how you put that. Pretty much sums up Man City.

Picking a team isnt necessary right now, Rex. Just watch the teams each week and the weekly highlights show and players you like will pop out at you, as will teams that you like to watch.

I became a Liverpool fan because of Steven Gerrard, Owen and Didi Hamann. I also watch Fulham games for Bocanegra and McBride and ManCity for Reyna, but at the end of the day, when i first heard the Liverpool faithful belt out You'll Never Walk Alone, i was pretty much baptised and initiated.

Take your time pickin' your team. here's a rundown of some teams -

Chelski - rich, powerful and unlimited pockets. The new Yankees of footy. LOve to hate them but they also have 4 of my fave players (Duff, Lampard, Terry and now Shawn Wright Phillips).

ManU - Glazer is one more reason to hate them.. or pity them. . but then again, they have Tim Howard as backup goalie, and the talented Chicagoan Johanthan Spector. He's only 20 and has been loaned to Charlton this season. With C. Ronaldo and Rooney playing alongsied the likes of KEane, Giggs and Scholes, they are a sight to behold.

Arsenal - fluidity and ferocity in motion. Even if you hate them, you have to get a hard on when they are on their best form. henry is like a friggin magician and ballerina. . with a gun.

LIverpool - the Steelers of the EPL. Diehard, blue collar fans. More defense than offensive flash, and alott grit and history

Tottenham - watch out. They have got talent in every third of the field and are gunning for a top 4 finish this year to book their ticket to the Champions League next year. Defoe, Mido, Kanoute and Robbie KEane are a fun group of strikers to watch. Great goalis and great young defender in Ledley King.

MIddlesbro
- up n comin' and at the same level as Tottenham. Got young Brit Downing on the wing and a solid strikeforce with nice midfield, too.

Newcastle - hard not to cheer for them when the legend Shearer is playing. He is amazing. End of story. They also have young and gifted players like Kieron Dyer and Jermaine Jenas. Shay Given may be the best keeper in the league.

Fulham - MCBride and Bocanegra along with talents like Boa Morte, Poppa Diop and Zat Knight. Also have a great french midfielder named Malbranque

ManCity - the best reason to watch them was Shawn Wright Phillips (SWP) who just got bought by Chelski. . will be fun to see waht they do with the bling. Reyna plays there, as does tought defender Dunne and striker Fowler. The always entertainingly hilarious goalkeeper David 'Calamity" James is the men picking the ball out of the net on many a fine occasion. always good for rising to the occasion and surprising the superpowers. the team has heart for sure and a great new manager. Looking to be on the up.

Bolton - they have the Nigerian Wizard Okocha along with a host of cast offs and elder statesmen. Its where footballers seem to go pre-retirement and who can blame them: Sam Allardyce has been great at gelling a rag tag bunch of has beens and mediocres into a team that placed 6th last year. They only look to be getting better.

Everton - dont even think of it :lmao:

Hope that helps.

Nope, Shevchenko won the Ballon D'or.

I think that is for the best player in Europe and Ronaldhino won the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Of course he plays in Europe too. :(

Thanks, Ghazi. That was an awesome list! It sure got me excited for the new year. My friend has digital cable, so I can see if he will tivo that FSC show for us to watch.

Everton's in the same town as Liverpool, right? I'm not sure about Liverpool, I can respect the Steelers, but I'm more into the Colts style of play, if you know what I mean.

I'm excited about Chelsea and Fulham coming to the US this week.

I'm watching FC Dallas get shut out now by Real Salt Lake. How weird is that?!?!?

Scotland: The one and only Glasgow Rangers. Can we have a bouncy? ;)

Interestingly enough, i was a Colts Season tix holder while living in Indianapolis from 199-2001. Got to see Edge play as a rooke. sublime.

Rex - are you going to any of the Chelsea or AC Milan games?

I saw ManU last year with bayern Munich and just saw Real madrid last week. I am going to AC Milan-ChicagoFire this Wednesday, too.

Who woulda believed all these teasm wouls be hitting our shores?!

It kinda depends on your personality I s'pose... If like that expectation of superiority every week then go for your Barcelonas, Chelski, AC Milans etc...

I kinda only ever remember supporting Liverpool. As an extra team though, I tried supporting Barca and Juve in the past but found it too much to focus my passion three way (no double entendre!). Additionally, it can get a bit confusing when both of your teams play each other in a European game...

If you really wanna go for the grass roots, try AFC Wimbledon!

You guys are all on drugs.

Juventus is simply going to dominate Europe next year.

They were already going to do it, but now they have Viera so its even more of a lock!

Depends how many games he plays. He has spent at least a third of the last couple of years injured.

That's right, technically Sheva is the 3rd best player in the world according to the FIFA poll with Henry in second.

The balon d'or is decide by journalists from a French sports publication isn't it. I remember Owen won that a few years back.

Hey Ghazi you know Costacurta fancies a move to the MLS? He said on Milan Channel that hes in love with the US and would enjoy playing in the MLS! Gilardino to start vs Chicago.

That would be great to see. Maldini has said the same as well and could be in the MLS by next year. . . now if we can convince Zizou to land stateside for a farewell year i'd be stoked. lol.

Sheva is also along for the trip i hear, so that shluld be great.

BTW - i'll be wearing my Liverpool tshirt to the Milan- Chicago game. . .let's see what happpens.

Now if Milan had won the final and you wore a Milan shirt in Liverpool, you'd probably get killed.

Its not got to that level has it Rune?
Well if Milan had won in the penalty shootout and then Gerrard had left for Chelsea, And theres one Milan shirt among thousands of Liverpool fans, I dont think he'd get treated well.

lol - the game was in Chicago. I wouldnt dare wear a Liverpool jersey to the San Siro or a Milan jersey to anfield (had Milan won). I like my face the way it is. .nice and pretty and untouched.

Other than Manchester United, the only team I support is AS Roma. When they're on fire they can be the most entertaining team in the world, especially the season before last. Totti deserved a Ballon D'or or something for what he did that season.
I'm also a bit fond of Fiorentina, but that's only because of Batigol.
