The Retro-PES Corner

Looking at @Chris Davies's PES 2014 thread, I'm compelled to ask: what's the best jumping off point for PES on PS3? No doubt the completist in me means I'll buy them all at some point, but for now, to play, where's the best place to start? It seems that 2012, 2013 and 2014 are held the most dear.

Of course, this is my return to the PS3. I started in 2007 with PES 2008...

Like all three games.
I prefer Pes 12 over 13 in the long run,13 is great, but to me it's a bit to end to end.
14 is a gem to me,loads of flaws, like most games, but it plays like a proper football game,I've started a Milan ML on it and I really like the game.
Few stadiums is a drawback, but all in all I'd go for 14.
I'm on PS3 as well

@Chris Davies To be fair it's not Konami's fault Saviola doesn't look anything like his PES player, he should try a bit harder. He could have at least got dreadlocks. :)

As 14 was another one I missed you're convincing me that I should give it a go as I'm currently really enjoying 13 having never played that one either. I lost 7-1 yesterday in the cup against a much better team (I was Bronshoj (Danish div3) v Fremad Amager (Danish div2). I got punished for pressing like a maniac as they just played around me and some really poor defending on my part, then I went down to 10 men for a second yellow card at 3-1 after 31 minutes and that was that. The players also really tired thanks to my manic early pressing. The point is though that I really enjoyed it despite getting hammered.

@Madmac79 Pure speculation but I wonder if it's because that first formation is not a default formation? I stand to be corrected but I'm pretty sure it isn't so presumably it's been set by the patchmaker. I don't think that should make the AI change it but might be worth changing it to a default one just to check out of curiosity.

As to getting the AI to stick to the default, you could check their playable positions, the more they have the more the AI tends to move them around, so if you wanted them to play with the two wing backs you could remove Petrescu and Le Saux's other positions and just leave them with WB. Likewise for other players, the less options the more likely they are to play where you'd like them to play.

I've just run a quick simmed season to test out Serie A and B. Some incredible talent in that league that season, look at this team of the season. You wouldn't want to be facing that too often would you!

when will this magnificent patch be released?

@geeeeee: Interesting ideas there. I totally agree with the 4th point; in fact it was my PES08 PS2 experience that convinced me to stop trying to build-up play from the back everytime I got possession back, rather do as you say and :square:-it away.
Though your 3-striker formation looks great offensively, have you tried replacing a striker with a SMF/CMF to strengthen your midfield, particularly when defending? To me it looks like you don't have enough men to help your defense.
I don't agree with the guy who says Def is not as important as it's thought to be. I remember getting Jackson the newgen CB (who later on evolved to a whooping 95-Def, but started off as being already much better than any of the Defaults on my team) and he single-handedly transformed our team from D2 garbage to D1 and WEFA Championships-winning side.
I also remember going up against +95 DEF players like Maldini/Barth and the like and they were defensive Gods on the pitch. DEF to me is the player's defensive-IQ, a hugely important stat.

Anyway, this is what's great about PES08 PS2. There is no winning formula: you have to study your players' stats carefully and then figure out a way to tie it all together in a collective strategy that works.

I have tried different formations, including 4-5-1 with 2 SMFs, an AMF, and 2 DMF's but I was finding it really hard to break down teams and would end up conceding and then changing my formation round again to try to get back in it. Also, with so many good attacking players, Guti, Castolo, Ordaz, Hamsun, Huylens, it can be difficult to leave them out although I know that some can play in various midfield positions.

I don't agree with everything that guy says either but it has made me look more at the Balance stat and definitely playing Cooper at the back has helped because he has the Defensive Line skill. I have also gone into the transfer market (more of that later) for another DMF to play alongside Camavinga, who himself is looking so composed in midfield. It's amazing how well the stats work and how much confidence I have when controlling Camavinga compared to Stein. He seems to have so much time on the ball and can hold off a challenge or two.

Here is our final game of the season and typically our best performance now that there is no pressure.

14. Sheff Utd v Canvey Eagles

Sheff Utd 0 v Canvey Eagles 3, I played Ximelez as an AMF in this match and he rewarded me with two poacher's goals. The match was finished with an Ordaz penalty. As I said this was probably our best performance of the season. Hopefully we can push on in our 4th season in the Championship.

A little review of our ML Season 21-22

And all the goals For and Against, a great mixture which shows how great this game is. My favourite CPU goal is at around 7.45 A. Jahanbakhsh for Brighton.

My favourite Canvey goal...all of them :P

Thankfully Guti got joint top assist in the league and earnt us some extra ML points which enabled us to buy Ole Selnaes, a DMF to eventually replace Stein and play alongside Camavinga.

The problem though is that we have to make around 8000 points next season otherwise Canvey Eagles will be bankrupt. :CONFUSE:

@Early PES footy fan: Welcome to the Corner, lovely first post there!
You mentioned you no longer have PES3: my friend, that's a crucial mistake right there. PES5 is often fantastic though flawed in some areas as you yourself described it - in a way that stats "tuning" doesn't help -; PES3 is rather a finished (and awesome) product, doesn't really disappoint on any area.

@WEtongelre: 'Outdated' is a word that doesn't belong to our dictionary. Rather, 'it's aging like a fine wine', because we played PES3 in 2003 and said 'holy crap how amazing is this', then played it again over the years and loved it, then played it in 2020 and said' holy crap how amazing is this - and how the hell were they able to create something this extraordinary with the crappy technology they had'. Our descendants will find some PES3 installer and wonder: 'this backwards civilization couldn't even conquer its galaxy and yet they made THIS?? Oh and by the way, let's play one more match...!'

@geeeeee: Replace Stein??
...I was thinking of organizing a PES Points Fundraiser to help Canvey out; perhaps selling some Retro-PES Bibles, copies of Espimas' amateur porn movies, Minanda said he would gladly sell 5 or 6 of his farms, no big deal...but if you replace Stein I hope the club goes bankrupt.

@geeeeee love to see your squad building. I can't remember, do you have particular transfer rules? Since you already have a good bunch of forwards and the midfield seems complete I'd also search for a good sb/smf, depending on the module you intend to use next season and assuming you could of course. Needing to do 8000 points will already add spice things up a lot.

While i am searching a way to play Football Kingdom, i dropped on this beautifull game, back from 2002 according to PCSX2 wikia! Seems that @MafiaMurderBag commented on this video, so he knows about this game. It seems to have some very good points, given its age, like ball physics and movement fluidity and also some very bad points like net physics, from a quick watch!
The body movement detail AND ONLY this, seems superior to FIFA and ISS/PES of the given age, 2002! Also an angle camera 9 years prior pes2011 and 18 years prion to pes2020!! :)

I wondered why my channel had a recent bit of traffic from evo-web 😀. I also done another quick vid the other day just showing some goals and highlights from the 2 games I played. This game does amaze me for its time, but as pointed by you guys already, it has some flaws which spoil the playing experience. There were a few goals that I had to exclude from this vid because there was huge disconnects from the kicking animation to the ball movement/direction. All in all, it was an eye opener playing this game for the first time last year and revisiting it the other night. This game had huge potential.

Hey dude, with a channel full of PES content, sooner or latter you would have traffic from here, especially for the retro content. I love that video of Adriano on Wii!

Thanks for taking a look mate. And thanks for the sub too 👍. I should really post on here more often. It’s the busy life getting in the way, haha. I’ve got a ton of PES & WE games in my collection so I’m sure there is plenty for you to like. Making an effort to publish more vids now. I’m a huge fan of the retro games and have been loving experiencing the WE games over the last couple of years. So many of these WE games I never existed when I was younger.

You are welcome. You are in the right place when we speak about RetroWEPES games. And an off topic question about Fantasista,, cause my version on PC emulator is glitched. Do you use some special settings, or it just depends on the version of the game?

I had problems too. My preferred way to play PS2 games is on my modded PS3 but it glitches on that. Not sure if it’s because the game was originally a CD and not a DVD, or if it’s a Hz issue. I’m not sure. I had to use my modded PS2 to play this glitch free. I have the same problem with Football Kingdom too. I like to collect so I try to play all the games on the original hardware when possible.

Yeah I have the same vision on retro gaming, but I wish I had that vision when I was younger. Unfortunately over the years, I lost a SNES, a N64 and a PSX console, all left in oblivion in the most weird places, IE the old apartment of a crazy ex-girlfriend, the old house of a friend's grandpa that was demolished years before in order to be reconstructed etc... :(

@miguelfcp  ok maybe he will only be back up for Stein. I'm sure I saw a plane with a banner flying above my home a minute ago. It looked like Stein was flying it himself. :DD

@Madmac79 I began by planning to keep the defaults until they retire but then I came up with the idea of the ML 'game' being over once a team has won the Champions League 10 times so keeping the defaults until retirement would make it difficult to progress quick enough to compete in that challenge. When somebody does win it 10 times then I can move to a club below us or up to 5 places above us in the team rankings although that would mean starting a new ML but at least I have the opportunity of managing different teams in different leagues. There are no 'Transfer Rules' as such as the game makes it hard to buy players anyway on 'Hard' difficulty. The only thing I will do is, if a team makes a bid for one of my players, the outcome will depend on the buying team's Team Ranking and on our Team Ranking, plus the Mentality stat of the player. So if a big club was to come in for Camavinga, I may have to let him go.

I will eventually invest in a left back as Ruskin does make a few passing errors at critical times.

@mattmid I think i saw Selnaes tied to the back of that plane that Stein was flying

Here is yet another video of my our squad development so far. (for any that are interested in this kind of stuff)

Getting my football fix on Pes 14,and on Football Manager 2011.
I've taken over Hammarby, mid season, this is btw our worst season (irl) we've had in over a 100 years.
We we're saved by a 94th minute goal (1-0) Vs another relegation candidate, both teams played some form of 2-3-6 formation the last 20 minute trying to win 3pt and be clear of relegation to the 3rd division.
I was there and pitched after the final whistle, drunk as a skunk with a few thousand friends, great away day.

Anyway,I've taken over halfway through the season
Came in and 4 key players are long term inj,no funds to buy players, absolutely no money for salaries if I find a free agent/loan deal.
10th place,8 games left now,4 points down to relegation.
Love it!

@mattmid ha ha i just had to check if you meant that they were good or they were bad. I thought for a minute “did i check his passing stats?” ha ha imagine i go and buy a player and then the chairman asks “what’s his passing like?”my reply “hmm damn i forgot to check that when i was watching him play”

Yeh he looks good, he has obviously developed that area of his game while he has been in China. I like reading up about real players that i buy to see if they reflect how they are in the game. Especially PSD forum is good for that.

The good thing is, as mentioned before, is that Salnaes’ Team Work rating with the other players is quite low compared to Stein. So it will be a case of bringing him off the bench to start with until he gets used to his team mates. Such a simple thing but it works so well in this game. :)

Yeah it’s unfortunate but as a kid growing up you just have to sell/trade your consoles to upgrade to the latest. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some consoles gifted to me which has helped with costs recently. I started a mission to be able to play all of the PES/WE games on every possible console. I’m nearly there now 🙂. I consider this an early midlife crisis, haha.

Wanna talk about early midlife crisis?

I started doing a similar thing, buying up old consoles and all the old football games I used to play, but I only started a couple of weeks ago (lockdown boredom maybe).

This morning, my latest purchases arrived:

How in God's name did I buy the same game twice, and not notice what I was doing?

35 going on 85...

Brilliant, Chris :APPLAUD:. There is something oddly pleasurable about buying a retro football game already knowing it’s going to be sh*te, haha. You might have saw my recent bundle on twitter the other day. I knew a couple of the PS1 Fifa games would be horrendous and I wasn’t wrong. Can’t wait to jump on WLS 98 tonight!!

If it is sealed it is good from collectors perspective. The one for use, the other to become exhibit in your shelf.

Oh, I’ve just noticed what you’ve done now, Chris. I didn’t read/look at it properly as I was eating dinner. That’s some work to buy it twice in a short period. I thought you meant you bought it once all them years ago and just bought it again now. Well, if one of them is up for grabs, I might know someone .
