FIFA 21 Discussion (Console Versions)

Like I said, these people are their own worst enemies and they don't even realize it. They don't want variation in execution because the emphasis is on "competitive play." In their eyes, you can't have competitive play if random variables are involved. Unfortunately, they tend to forget they're playing a game that's supposed to mimic a real sport to some degree. This isn't League of Legends. It's a win at all costs mentality mixed with dare I say, a complete lack of understanding of the football.

Anyone with sense can see that he clearly overpowered the cross. It's hit at what, 80%+ bar? That's what happens. Do they really want their hand held to the degree of, "push square for perfect cross." If you overhit it, you overhit it. Would they demand an underhit shot that trickles towards the keeper to be a goal just because they hit the shot button? It's ridiculous.

I often think that the perception of the real thing has been warped by the way many consume football - highlight reels of elite players and the big four leagues. A large percentage of football's global audience will have barely seen a fluffed cross in their lives. That'll extend to the gaming market. I'll tell my grandkids about the four good crosses I've seen in the flesh.

This is where new features like "timed finishing" come in. Hit the button when the bar is green and your shot will be more accurate. Body position? Weak/Strong foot? Angle? Pressure? Defender in the way? Oh, never mind any of that nonsense.

1. Take away skill relating to the sport itself (even people who know nothing should be able to "compete" and buy fifa points!)
2. Replace it with something that everyone understands

You know have a garbage game that feels nothing like football but it's also making you more money!
Yeah, timed finishing is a perfect example of what I mean. Take something that should depend on many contextual factors like you outline and dumb it down to only needing "leet gamer skills" to "widen the skill gap".

I expected "timed first touch" or some other nonsense like that to be implemented this year, so that you could perfectly control an 80mph waist height ball as long as you time a button press. Probably next year they'll hype it up as a brand new feature and call it something like "Majestic Touch™". Wouldn't be surprised to see a similar thing for passing or heading, where you get a perfect outcome any time you time it correctly.

From what I've read, you "rank up" your stadium in FUT as you get better, so when you're playing against a good player, they'll have earnt a bigger stadium than yours. You don't buy the stadium "card" you want (or get it in a pack) any more.

I'll always hate FUT but honestly, I think that's a pretty cool idea.

Really cool if you could do that in career mode too.

Adaptive AI :?

I love the "just go play the real thing" answer.
This drives me crazy everytime.
Everyone playing Assetto Corsa has a GT3 car in his garage and often takes it to the track, am I right? Every SimCity player has been (or currently is) a mayor, isn't this true?
I wish I could suggest them to go play Fortnite's "real thing" (a.k.a. to go get shot) but they wouldn't understand.

That's just the AI "competitor mode" option they've mentioned previously. Turn it on and the AI are harder to play against, and (worryingly) "more like an online competitor"... The AI is ping-pong and unrealistic enough as it is (even if it's still too easy).

And the "attributes" bit just lets you choose between standard player attributes and "make every player 85 OVR" (for a completely fair game).

Funnily enough, Fortnite was in my reply to the guy:

...which is a thing that we can now do while selecting the "live form" IIRC (the last time I played the options were "live form off", "live form on", "85 OVR for everyone" and I remember I was quite surprised to see it there beacause I didn't remember it from the previous time).
Wasn't a thing like that also present in FIFA 17 though? I remember we had to choose between "balanced" or "real life" attributes for players.

My mistake. It must because I played so much PES 2020 and the option file I had Lloris wore his light blue kit!
Which is even worse if you ask me (as those Tottenham kits are fan-made so I'd expect kitmakers to take care of these issues when releasing a set by adding a non-clashing GK kit).
Also, not remembering Tottenham's kits correctly may have been a small mistake of yours, but it's surely not your mistake when both FIFA and PES do this for several teams every year.
PES used to have away GK kits back in the day (the code and the "room" in the data files for them were there even in PES 2013 IIRC, even if by then home and away GK kits were already identical) and they worked quite well.
Scouser09 added support for them to FIFA 12-16 with Revolution Mod (and thanks to this in FIFA 16 kit clashing was avoided in a completely automatic fashion provided that the kitpacks had the correct lua assignments)... You could even decide to assign three or four GK kits to a team (the assignment for any outfield kit could be different aswell) and have the game choose the first one that didn't clash (following your order).
I can't see how hard can bringing it back into the game can be for either of the companies.

Yet another thing that has been brought away and that will probably return at a later date and be labeled as "ground-breaking new feature".

Good shout, might be that. I was thinking that they may have moved stuff around (from the "live form" menu).

I agree with all of your post.

Silly little things annoy me way more than they should with both games but in FIFA 21 I’d love them to change things like Wolves being called Wolverhampton Wanderers, the ability to change shorts and socks colour (never going to happen because EA might not be allowed to give us that option), Spurs being called Tottenham Hotspur (I always play as them in FIFA and it annoys me that the league table says Spurs) and there are a million other things I won’t bore everyone with...

If EA made a challenging FIFA again in single player, with a few aesthetic changes and made the AI teams actually play like their real life counterparts, I’d be as happy as a pig in sh*t. But I just don’t trust them at all as a single player.

They want us all to turn to FUT.

edit: and I’ve just noticed @Chris Davies post about making AI harder to play so it’s like a real life player. This is extremely interesting and all of a sudden I’m a tiny bit more interested in this than I initially was. But like you say, if it’s going to be ‘hard’ but ping pong passing back to front in 20 seconds I won’t enjoy that at all.

"Competitor Mode - Replicating the play style of the best FIFA players in the world, setting gives your opposition a better grasp of skill moves, dribbling types, and tactics to give you a more challenging and rewarding opponent to match up with on Legendary and Ultimate difficulty."

So basically the CPU will use the same exploits as competitive players. The only possible good that could come out of this, is that by making this distinction, the non-competitive template might feature a more simulation-like playstyle then it would without this mode. This because they dont have the cater to both worlds in a single template.

Just noticed "manual headers" among the gameplay "features". I wonder if this is going to be what I half joked about, where it's basically timed finishing for headers. Either that or it's to override your player doing a bicycle/scorpion kick when they can easily just head the ball.

Sounds so damn awful to think they are inspired by that atrocious playstyle even for the single player. Now the poisoning is almost complete.

To think that as a kid, after afternoons and evenings of pure fun in multi with my friends playing Pes, I used to wonder how could would have been if CPU played like humans and highly hope for Konami or somebody else to truly implement it.

Well I guess that's the classic, cautionary "be careful what you wish for" tale came true.

Stolen/borrowed/inspired by EASHL on NHL.
Good move

Not comparing here, but I've been constantly pissed off when Pes changed U.S. Palermo to just Palermo,or "something Calcio" to just "something"

Remember FIFA 17 (the last game that had plenty of it) and all their classic kit?
Use to love playing Liverpool v Villa in their old uniforms.
Such a shit move taking that away.
Guess the sponsor names must be shown etc

Looks like EA may start including tv ads in sports games. UFC is the first one to get them.
"EA Sports, which publishes UFC 3, is on board with the tests. An Electronic Arts spokeswoman declined to comment".

(No indication that fifa 21 will have them, but who knows, maybe in due time. Depends on how their ufc test goes I guess.)
Similar to the kind of stuff 2K have been doing with their NBA games, and getting away with it too - and, combining it with aggressive microtransactions.

Screenrant: NBA2K20 Unskippable Ads
2K’s recent policies have been downright predatory. With versions of the game costing up to $100, NBA 2K20 encourages players to keep spending money as they play in ways only mobile games come close to matching. This year's entry is notable for having a casino in-game. Screen Rant's review of NBA 2K20 details the pay-to-win ecosystem and how the game feels like a perpetual grind that throws all sorts of gambling-related activities at the player, from card-packs to wheels to limited-time promotions.

Pretty disgusting - and it's here to stay.

"In exchange for watching the 15- or 30-second commercials—which is optional. Players don’t have to watch them—gamers receive points or other rewards they can use for in-game benefits."

Looks like it would just be for "coins" in Ultimate Team (yes, UFC has that mode as well) - it's still shitty, but I thought it could have been that they would force you to have an unskippable TV style ad break at half time, or replace loading screens with ads etc. Wouldn't shock me to see that eventually though.

Mobile games have had this type of "watch ads for gems/gold/lives" mechanic for ages, I'm surprised it's taken so long to come to console. FUT is pretty much one of those shitty freemium P2W mobile games despite being the main focus of a full price game.

The thread below is pretty depressing. I have to translate each tweet (using Twitter's automated translation tool) but basically, "nobody in the beta test is critiquing the gameplay at all". Click the tweet below and then click it again when it loads up, and it should take you to the thread:

Main points are:

With all due respect to the FIFA community (and not generalising) they've been given gameplay to TEST, and I don't see anyone (no influencers) commenting on any (gameplay) in the beta. Gameplay full of poor AI, players skating, weird ball physics and basically the same as FIFA 20, and yet I only see positive comments from these guys. "Add a new mechanic, we want new licenses, Firmino's face is new, lighting is better, etc..." What about gameplay? No? Is the most important thing for you guys the background? Seriously, I don't see one single criticism.

I think they aren't allowed to talk about the beta or they might risk getting banned? Not that I doubt the main points about the gameplay. That was pretty much what we saw in the leaked video.

My concern is that he, or a contact of his, is basing this on either beta forum posts or on DMs involving testers (who, as he says, are largely streamers and/or influencers). They might not say things publicly but I'd wager they'll be talking privately.

NDA(Non Disclosure Agreement) exists for that. Game Changers cannot say anything. They will only be able to speak on the 4th of August. We will have all the gameplay news on this date, in addition to a video.
