The Retro-PES Corner

Just watched the Belgium vs Scotland game @miguelfcp @mattmid
My boys made me proud!

I want to give out my own rankings for each player, (since I am their manager ;))

Delanghe (G) 8/10 - Not much to do in the first half but made a few nice late saves
Lissens (CB) 8/10 - Won most of Ariel duels and had a solid game overall
Vandermeulen (CB) 9/10 - Bossed the backline. Immense performance
Nizet (RB) 5/10 - Too weak and poor decision making. Might get dropped to the bench next game
Kotchkarov (LB) 8/10 - Solid game. Got up the wings well to add width, but also performed well defensively
Masangu (DMF) 9/10 - What a beast this guy is. Helped control the midfield and played well in the "destroyer" role
Baiye (CMF) 9/10 - Who is now the 2nd of the destroyer brothers, (Masangu and him) played powerful and won many key tackles
Patoulidis (CMF) 8/10 - Professional performance. Did the little things that don't always get noticed. Did well to get numbers up the field in attacking play
Openda (AMF) 6/10 - With as much skill as he as I was disappointed in his performance. Poor decision making and just gave the ball away too much. I expect more from him
Leoni (AMF) 10/10 - This guy oozes class. Was able to get the ball to Cuypers on many key passes. He is what makes our attack tick. What a sweet goal as well
Cuypers (CF) 10/10 - 3 goals for a striker? :TU: Displayed deadly finishing. Pretty much a perfect game

Classic Scotland. Shite.

Those stats though... So very much classic Scotland. Plucky shite.

These things happen. Well played @Special4988.

I know all of us here drink the retro PES "koolaid" but again I have to give point out how these PES games just nail player individuality. Watching the Belgium/Scotland game I could clearly see big differences between each player. I start to become attached to them and not see them as programmed AI, but as lifelike players with their own strengths and weaknesses. And watching the youth players, I began asking myself how will they turn out in 3-5 years of development.

Props to @miguelfcp and @mattmid for putting on this tournament. I can see how much work is going into this, but it is thoroughly enjoyable. Hopefully this will lead to other ideas as well ;)

@Special4988 Thanks :) That player individuality is so true of the retro PES games isn't it? I know exactly what you mean about the players too, how you become attached to them just like the ML defaults who when you first start a game with them you're ready to ship them all out and then you find yourself unable to part with most of them!

Some of these club sides in the OF (which we will release officially after this tournament) must have scouts queuing up to get in to watch them. Lyon have some real talent as do Monaco and many others as well besides the Man City's and Ajax's you'd expect. Partizan and Red Star for instance, Dinamo Zagreb - there's a guy there called Marin who looks exceptionally good and surely a future star.

We were so surprised to see Italy and France go out because they have some exceptional talent in their sides, but as is so true in real football, it's on the day that matters. And for those two, not one of their forwards stepped up on the day to show what they could do.

Some of the drama so far has been amazing and I really couldn't pick a winner at this stage, not having seen some of the upsets that have already gone on.

Keep an eye out later for a post on a warm up step to something else. ;)

WORLD YOUTH CUP STATS

A quick recap of the full 1st Round Results.

1strnd.JPG

Only players who are in teams that have gone through are included in the following stats.

The battle for the Golden Boot has well and truly begun today with Cuypers hat-trick hurtling him up to join Griffiths at the top of the leaderboard. The dangerous Ruiz sits behind with his 2 goal from his 5 minutes of work so far in the tournament. After choosing to take the first 85 minutes of his game off. Edelhofer of Austria also proved he has a striker's instinct with a brace against Peru. Whilst Mihailia of Romania might not be expected to keep up with the strikers, his finishing against Denmark showed he was no mug in front of goal. Griffiths meanwhile will be licking his lips at the prospect of China in the next round. First though he has to keep Brewster out of the team who came on and grabbed a goal himself in a lively subs appearance.

goals.JPG

Plenty of players chipped in with assists in the First Round and more than a few of them stood out as players to watch.

assists.JPG

Player Of The Tournament.

Early days and with players having to play a minimum of 200 minutes to be considered we should take a moment to mention some standout performances from those who won't be in contention as they were first round losers. Probably best of all was Bafounta who made no less than 13 interceptions in his game and played like a giant sized Makelele in the French midfield. Julardzija had a fine game in an attacking midfield role for Croatia as they battered Ireland on their way to a 1-0 loss! However you get nothing for missing the target and that was exactly what they got. Pavlak just behind him in midfield was superb as well. If the three guys in front of them had played half as well they'd be in the 2nd Round. Espinoza of Peru was another who had a fine game in his side's eventual capitulation to Austria late on in extra time. Tagseth of Norway had a good game as well unfortunately it was one he largely played on his own. Lastly Biai of Portugal played very well in midfield.

Of those who made it through, this is how the Player Ratings stack up so far.

ratings.JPG

There are several players on 1 yellow card going into the next round. 2 yellows will result in a one game ban (as will any red)

Cards.JPG

@cosmo Szabo picked up a four week injury. (Rules are that a player will miss his injury weeks minus one - so he'll miss 3 games. On the plus side he'll be available for the final ;) )

The only other player injured more than a week is Gubinelli of Switzerland (2 weeks, so he will miss the next match)

England manager 'Arry @sniglet was heard to mutter something about being down to the bare bones after some training ground injuries. China manager @jihado86 claimed he knew nothing about it.

World Youth Cup 2019 - Week #2 recap

The second week of the World Youth Cup 2019 comes to an end. Check out both the match reports and some of the broadcasted matches.

Matchday #10: Austria 3-1 Peru (E.T.)
Matchday #11: Russia 1-1 Germany (3-4 PK)
Matchday #12: Poland 1-0 Norway
Matchday #13: Greece 1-4 England
Matchday #14: Belarus 1-0 Finland
Matchday #15: South Korea 1-1 Portugal (3-1 PK)
Matchday #16: Scotland 0-4 Belgium

If the first week of the competition had already been a memorable one, it's fair to say that the following was no less spectacular. Exhibit A, Austria-Peru: many were considering Peru to be a potential underdog candidate to the title - or at least a team that would make waves in this competition further on - but Austria was able to neutralize their potent midfield and came out on top in extra time. I don't believe we'll hear a lot more from this Austrian team later on, they're fairly mediocre.

Germany didn't have as much of a tranquil ride as most predicted and was only able to beat Russia on penalties, despite the fact that they dominated the match. Many of the title candidates are having a tough time right now and some have already exited the competition, so Germany has to be happy about the outcome of that game nevertheless. Poland was facing perhaps the most feared striker of the competition, Norway's Haland...and brilliantly neutralized the threat, coming out on top with a 1-0 win. I expect this to be the only noteworthy thing they'll be able to pull of in this WYC.

England's striker Griffiths has written his name on the potential superstars of the future that this World Youth Cup will help discover. The man scored a hat-trick in just 12 minutes! England comfortably breezes past Greece (1-4) and confirmed its status as one of the title candidates. It's fair to say that Belarus - Finland was one of the matches that fans did not want to spend 90 minutes in front of the TV watching it...if you were one of the few who resisted the urge to get up and leave, you witnessed yet another dramatic encounter as Belarus got the winning goal in the last few seconds of the match for to get a 1-0 win! Belarus was expected to be one of the most exciting underdogs but they weren't at all able to confirm that status against a rather mediocre Finnish side.

Yet another title candidate exits the competition as South Korea shockingly beats Portugal - though despite playing with only 10 men during a great portion of the match because of B. Sousa's early red card, South Korea was only able to beat the Portuguese on penalties. As expected the Koreans were not defensively brilliant but they do showed an interesting ability to completely wreck an otherwise solid Portuguese backline. On the very last day of this exciting Round of 32, Belgium trashed Scotland with a 4-0 win and revealed another potential MVP (and/or a top scorer) candidate, Cuypers, as the young man scored three goals. Belgium definitely looks like it might have what it takes to fight for the title if they keep their beautiful offensive dynamic.

As always we're underrated and everybody consider us the weakest team and the bets on us are microscopic, but when we'll strike everyone, they'll never know what just hit them.
Stay tuned for the Chinese tsunami coming to conquer the world. (Maniacal laughs in Chinese)

@Special4988: To those people who think we're some kind of fetishists, or "nostalgia-freaks" as they call us, all one needs is to show them a match like this Belgium-Scotland for them to witness a tiny bit of the glory of retro-PES games.
About the (young) players of the competition, it's one of the reasons why we're so excited about this: we're getting a first-look on many of the potential superstars of the future of football (while playing a retro-PES game...the irony!). The vast majority of football fans don't know who the hell is Griffiths or Cuypers, yet if these guys end up dominating the 2020s decade of football, we'll have known them for a very long time already!...

Glad you're enjoying yourself and hope everyone else is as well. We're loving every minute of it ourselves.

@Flipper the Priest: I still think that your Scotland wasn't at all horrible, but on the pitch the difference between each team's individual quality was rather obvious. If you had a guy like Cuypers up front, things would've been different surely...
You're welcome to pick another team it you want to :)

Oh and about PSD, I had a look on their Discord channel and it looks like they're having some kind of problem with the server and are waiting to hear back from the service providers regarding this situation.

@jihado86: If your China wins this one, the following image shall be my next evo-web avatar:

Yeah I'll take another team. Who's left?

Hopefully PSD is back soon. I'm not a regular, but there's one particular forum post that I want to access. Not sure if I've mentioned it before on this thread, but someone over there has exported all player stats from PES 4-14 into spreadsheets. Very interesting/handy. I've messed up one of the spreadsheets and can't find my original download.

Edit: doesn't matter, found it in my Google history. myactivity.google.com is scary.

Link to the download, in case anyone's interested: https://mega.nz/#!ZM0ygI6Z!h2WmUfwgk0WildE31uoAUUsayFNmgOJSMFo-wHrFWNs

@Flipper the Priest Yeah I'm surprised google didn't know you were looking for it and email it to you!

That's a handy set of stats to have, thanks for that.

Ok, well Spain v Poland is underway now, so we have open...

Germany
Romania
Switzerland
Belarus
Bulgaria
Austria
South Korea

and the winner of Spain v Poland.

@Flipper the Priest Ok, great. You can just use the same OF you used for Scotland. Miguel will be playing that one out so just forward it to him again. Obviously the squad can't be changed now though.

@wildwind are you going to take another team?

Current list...

ROUND 2

Match Day #17

Spain v Poland

Spain make one change to their first round starting line-up. Out goes Lopez who had a very poor game in attacking midfield. Gomez steps forward from CM to take his place. Coming into Central Midfield is Bernabe.

Poland, fairly comfortable winners over Norway field an unchanged side but Fila and Klups switch positions.

Spa v Pol.JPG

Spain v Poland

Sit back and enjoy a little World Youth Cup.

Poland started the game with a plan to be solid out of possession and look to counter attack on Spain quickly when they got it back. It worked perfectly. Despite Spain's crisp passing they were constantly hounded in midfield and whilst Poland didn't make great use of the ball when they had it, they produced three great counter attacks, all of which could and should have led to goals. One did of course and as the game went on and Spain came on strong it looked like the two missed chances may come back to haunt them. However, despite Spain's late equaliser and pressure, Poland stayed in the game.

The late drop to 10 men didn't overly hamper Spain, who went all out attack for the entire second half and extra time, apparently confident they could hold off any Polish counter attacks. Twice they didn't but as we saw Poland missed the chances. Eventually it all came down to penalties. A chance for someone to be a hero. That man was Kochalski in the Polish goal who made FOUR penalty saves from the seven Spain took. Quite astonishing. Two of them diving high in the goal to claw them out. Despite Spain's over all dominance and playing with 10 men for the last 50 mins of the match I have to say Poland deserved it for their desire to not get beaten. They always had that threat on the break with Zjawinski, with Zylla joining in as well. Yet another favourite falls by the wayside as Poland progress to the quarter finals. That's now Haland of Norway and Ruiz of Spain they have made to look very average. Who's to say they can't go all the way?

M.o.M: Despite Antonio of Spain probably being the best player on the pitch today it has to go to Kochalski. Four penalty saves? Unbelievable.

Worthy Mention: Grudzinski and Zukowski played very well at the back for Poland. Zjawinski and Zylla while not doing a great deal were a constant threat on the break although both had chances to win it in regular time.

Disappointment: Ruiz. 210 minutes played in this World Youth Cup and he's turned up for five of them.

Poland's major worry now is the booking Zjawinski picked up and they'll be hoping he doesn't pick up another in the Quarter Final. Should they get to the Semi's they can't afford to lose him from their attack.

Kazuki Ito made his first appearance at the World Youth Cup and as usual brought along his cards to show people. To be fair to him, Miranda's challenge was as cynical as they get and while not directly a scoring chance, as there were other defenders around, it wasn't a decision you could say was really harsh.

@mattmid
OTkveVt.png

Miranda got Kazuki Ito'd.

What an amazing match, yet again. Poland deserved to win this one, Zylla could've scored the 2-0 by the 34th minute and it'd be the dagger on this one, also Zjawinski had another great chance as well. Spain never gave up though and got a wonderful goal by López, who had been one of the worst Spanish players in the previous match.
Then, Kochalski steals it on the PK shootout.

Damn it. I'm not managing either of this teams and I'll have to take a bit to calm down my nerves after all this drama!

@miguelfcp
Yes! The drama of those penalties again! First the initiative was with Spain then Poland kept it alive only for Sancet to miss his chance to win it with a Kochalski save, then they score their next two to win it!Great stuff yet again. Poland are becoming quite a story.

@Flipper the Priest: Whoa  I had no idea such thing existed, thanks for posting it. That should be a fundamental file for the retro-PES editing toolbag.

Yeah it's pretty handy. Been using it for my PES3 option file. I've compiled it into the one sheet (PES only, no Winning Eleven) which I can upload. In it, I've accounted for the difference in stats between PES4 and the rest. Also there are some errors in the PES4 sheet. Wingers and strikers are the wrong way round. Also, the sweeper column can be completely ignored - it's the Libero column that has Sweepers.

:OT:

In other football news:

Rapinoe claims golden boot and the USA their fourth Women's World Cup.
Something tells me FIFA and the Orange lad will not like that.

Italian football journalist Tancredi Palmeri, a man always good for a quote, describes the offer needed to force a move from Napoli of central defender: Kalidou Koulibaly as "pornographic".

Guess that means Man City or PSG then.......

:SHOCK::SHOCK::SHOCK:

@WhoAteMeDinner To be fair to Man City they are (relatively speaking in the bananas world of transfer fees) fairly frugal with their spending, individual wise at least.

I would think the Orange lad will be fairly pleased about the team winning even if not the golden boot winner, because he will be able to claim that it was because of him and how great he has made the country.

@mattmid, matters mate, City just splurged 62.5 million British pounds on Rodri.
A defensive midfielder who I thought might have been Welsh, with that name.

The Orange lad cares not a toss for anything that does not have a Trump logo splashed all over it.
That includes iwanka.......:BLINK::BLINK::BLINK:
